zueliama Posted January 9, 2013 (edited) Does wireless make the computers internet slower? My computers internet connection has been getting so slow that it is almost impossible to use. We recently put in a new hard drive, it was slow before that, and now it seems to have gotten worse. My family has another computer that is the exact same kind, that runs at way faster speeds. _____________________________ life in australia ~ about the australia ~ things to do in australia Edited January 13, 2013 by Guest

SchroedingersCat Posted January 10, 2013 Does wireless make the computers internet slower? My computers internet connection has been getting so slow that it is almost impossible to use. We recently put in a new hard drive, it was slow before that, and now it seems to have gotten worse. My family has another computer that is the exact same kind, that runs at way faster speeds. Wireless does run slower than a wired connection, and if you're noticing a significant difference in speeds from wired to wireless on the devices in your home, then you're probably getting a lot of interference from devices around you. Televisions, microwave ovens and other wireless devices are the biggest causes of interference, so try moving your computer away from those sources and see if that makes a difference. But basically any device that runs on electricity can interfere, and generally the older it is the more powerful that interference is going to be. The other major possibility is that there is too much software installed on the computer, so you may want to check the average load of your memory while the computer is idle. Now with +/- 15% more uncertainty!
asianed Posted January 11, 2013 Typically, the bottleneck on your internet connection isn't going to be your wireless connection. While it could be a factor, the typical home internet connection is much slower than what is possible over wireless speeds. One way to test this is to run a speed test over your wireless connection (www.speedtest.net) and then compare it to if you plug your computer directly into your router or modem. If the two numbers are similar for both upload and download, then your wireless is probably not the source of the bottleneck. If possible, bring in another device (like a friend's laptop) and run the same test. If the numbers come out the same, then it's likely your home connection is bogged down or slow. What kind of connection do your have and who is your provider?
AntElitist Posted January 12, 2013 It depends. Here my internet speed is 1mbps and my wireless signal gives me around 11mbps. So it is far from being "throttled" by my wireless signal. that being said if your signal is too weak, that could be a problem too. So all you need is Aluminum foil....
