Normal BJD Eyes on DDs

AntElistist: Those are such amazing and realistic eyes in your Rise!!! Are they ED 18mm? I tried 18mm and they just gave her a vacant stare look. Wondering if anyone's tried 20mm or would they be too big?

 

That's actually Kosmos and Alna.... And yes. All 3 of my girls are on ED 18mm.

The other side is WDS 20mm acrylic eye.

I see the 22mm looks really nice. I should grab some and try, but dayum could be expensive. The resin eyes I bought wrongly for sheryl. The eyes looks derp.... orz

I think Sheryl is better with just 18mm with larger pupil, or 18mm wide iris type, or 20mm.

And better order with low dome. High dome looks weird in DD and harder to place in DD.

Here I have 22mm BJD eyes worn by Takane Shijou: Too big in my opinion, to show some white in her eye she must look to the side

I like glass eyes, My favorites are Ginarolo glass eyes and the ones from luts.com but, unfortunately, the biggest size Luts has is 18mm and Ginarolo is 20mm

Differences tend to be:

 

Quality - More expensive brands often have more strict quality control, and are less likely to send out eyes with off-center pupils, misshapen irises, bubbles in the resin, etc.

 

Color - More expensive brands often have richer, more intense colors as well as more colors to choose from

 

Details - More expensive brands often have more detail in their eyes, such as striations or lines around the pupil, glitter, metallic effects, color shifts, small items embedded within the eyes (gears for steampunk, small hearts and stars for a cute look), etc.

 

Reflection - More expensive brands often use a more luminescent materials that does a better job of catching the light, making the eyes look "less flat" and "more alive"

 

However, if you don't notice or don't care about the differences, there's nothing wrong with a pair of cheap glass eyes.

I have a pair of glass eyes from ebay as well as 2 acrylic pairs but consider it's very hard to find anything of 22 mm or better 24 mm size which is practically the only size most DD can wear without looking startled , just a few heads can wear 18-20 mm successfully ( Rise , Alna , Kosmos Takane and Alisa for example ) , while the eyes you linked are only 16 mm , so too small to look good

My girl, Jun, wears Enchanted Doll Urethane Eyes in 18mm:

 

 

 

I personally love them, and I've been contemplating putting Urethanes in Alna for quite some time... the color is so rich and it gets rid of that "STARE" feeling I sometimes get from the animatic eyes... where it feels to me like the dolls just have this unfocused stare.

Until I saw this thread today and your photos, I wasn't really a big fan of the normal BJD eyes but your dolls look so amazing. I may have to reconsider.

Has anyone heard of Coeur Lapin's line of glass eyes made for DD? Coeur Lapin is a BJD eyemaker (I think one artisan) in Japan who has made a line of eyes called 18mmO, which are elongated pupil/iris BJD-esque glass eyes.

Yes. That's Sheryl. And it's all faceup magic. I had my Hadaly (Kosmos) faceup by the same Artist and I am positive she can faceup Sheryl to the one I have in mind, so indeed it is working.

I got mine during one of the hongkong Doll party . I would say it's better to get them in a conversation then online shopping because you can see them in person. ED's eyes sometimes looks a lot different from the pictures they have online., I think it's because they are handmade and they sometimes just don't get the color palette right.
