Guys and Dolls: Who and What Got You Started in the Hobby?

100% Honestly....

I don't even remember how long it's been for me since I had an interest in it. I first really realized I was into cuter, more "girly" things in my later high school years but I really struggled to balance this with my family until I moved out and then it didn't really matter anymore.

It really started with Sanrio plushes for me, then it branched to anime figures. I also was into lolita fashion (not wearing it because I'm not physically androgynous enough to pull that off...) and when the anime Rozen Maiden came out, I kind of connected dolls and lolita as well. Rozen Maiden was really my first exposure to anything that really centered around dolls.

I think there is one thing that really finally gave me the final push to start getting dolls in addition to figures though.

When I started going to anime conventions more, I'd occasionally stop by the BJD panels and photo meets. I always found the dolls really lovely. At that time, my interest in photography was also peaking. I figured that pose-able dolls would make for more dynamic photography than static figures and I found BJD / DD / Azone types more appealing aesthetically than Figmas. So I believe for me it's a lasting love for cute, "girly" things combined with a push from my interest in photography that got me into it solidly. I'm still planning out my first DD but it's pretty safe to say I'm invested already

As far as acceptance from friends... I surrounded myself with open minded people that didn't care anyway. A lot of the girls I know love seeing my dolls and my girlfriend is fond of them as well. My closer male friends don't care. My lesser close ones... most of them don't see them anyway but if they did, I imagine they may tease a bit but I really wouldn't care. I've bought one of my Pure Neemos to work a few times and nobody really said anything as well.

The struggles with my parents I mentioned earlier... it was surprisingly centered more around my mother. My dad never seemed to care when he was around but my mom was the one that would make comments like, "Why do you have so many posters of girls?" when coming into my room. It got to a point where I put up a Kenshin wallscroll just to get her off of my back about it >.>

She's not a bad mother or anything but I think she still doesn't really realize that my set of interests isn't 100% typical of what society expects of males. That's fine though... I really only have to share as much as I want to nowadays... I'm almost 30 and I've been living out of the house since 2008 ^^;

It's very interesting to see where everyone is coming from on this topic for sure!

It's that damned Danny Choo's fault!

Same for me! I first saw his Doll, after I had already been collecting figurines and after a while I became more and more interested in them. My very first Dollfie is is hopefully going to arrive tomorrow!!!

I also just am one of those guys who loves moe things and anime culture. My wife can't stand dolls, but here I am becoming involved in Dollies. I am excited to dress her up and give her a unique personality. I am starting to browse the forums more here so that I can learn more about everything.

For me, it was Danny Choo as well. When watching Culture Japan I would always see those dolls behind him and wondered what they were. During episodes I would say which I liked to my wife who often agreed.

It wasn't until 2 weeks ago that we really started to research them. I purchased my wife her first DD (Yukino the 2nd) and 2 outfits, 1 of which was a limited edition (had no idea), and a pair of boots. I'm totally jealous now and really want my own! But I have to wait since the cost of this one was high.

I really wanted the limited Asuna DD but I was a bit to late for the show on that one. Not sure Ill ever be able to get one of the limited edition's ones but I can dream!

This is shaping up to being a great hobby I can share with my wife and look forward to the other parts the hobby has to offer in terms of fashion.

Oh, and its nice to meet you all!

Nice to meet you! I am also new, but very jealous! My wife does not like dolls and does not really care for my DD. Lol, she tolerates it just like my other hobbies just as I tolerate hers

Yes, I am very lucky in that respect. My wife is also a gamer and we play MMO's together as well. She was also into anime more that I was when we first met and I was able to watch anime I'd never heard of at the time. So I guess Dollfie was the next step, we can drool together over it all.
