Desert Sailor Posted February 12, 2013 (edited) I saw some people in the forums talking about the DD as a muse and this got me thinking. Do you use your DD as a source of creative inspiration and if so, why do you use them? For me, a major reason I am getting a DD is to help with my creative process. I find that it helps to have something that you can project your imagination onto, if only to get the mental gears turning. What are your thoughts? misskale Posted February 12, 2013 I guess the crafts I do would count for this. I use them this way because it is a smaller project than if I were attempting it for a normal person. I have enough attention problems I need to be able to complete it comparatively quickly.
mistyaera Posted February 12, 2013 For me, it's primarily because I write a lot. I use my girls to "embody" characters that are actually in stories I write. It's a lot of the fun for me- and I feel the dolls just add something special. Plus, it's so much fun to dress them up and pose them and really see a character come to life! milkytea Posted February 12, 2013 My dolls aren't my creative muses. I enjoy altering their appearances and taking photos of them, but they don't necessarily inspire me. It's still fun~

It's a lot of the fun for me- and I feel the dolls just add something special. Plus, it's so much fun to dress them up and pose them and really see a character come to life! This for me. I have just this week completed, after over a year, a custom DD of one of the characters I write about. Not gonna bother with the rest of my main story characters. Just wanted my main girl character. The rest of the dolls in the house aren't original characters. They're either being their default character (like Rin is herself) or they've been turned into customs of other characters from anime. So DDs aren't really a creative outlet for me. Not in the same way writing is. Are you ready to rock? ^_^
Ravendruid Posted February 13, 2013 This was one of the major reasons (or at least excuses) for me getting into the hobby. I wanted the girl to both help me practice and to inspire both sewing and photography. She still does, to an extent, (though I don't have nearly as much time as I'd prefer), but I've grown a lot more to simply love her for her, rather than as a craft project or model. Amara77 Posted February 13, 2013 Yes! Part of the reason I got into BJD and DD is because of the customization factor and wanting to make my OCs into dolls. It helps to see your character come to life! It also helps with photography and drawing. As soon as I got my DD I started sewing for her for the very first time! Now I love it! And would like to have a store front. She's definitely got me back into my old hobbies I thought I didn't have time for. Someone told me that your 8 year old self should be proud of who you are now in order for you to be happy. Well I think I would be lol! http://amara77.wordpress.com blog and shop Spoke too soon.... katnaper Posted February 13, 2013 Hmmm... I can't quite say I consider them as a Muse as they aren't my sole source of inspiration in the things I do but I do agree that they are great at getting me to develop my skills at sewing or, say, photography. Mostly, I just really like looking at them since just looking at them relaxes me. Nothing better than, a nice quiet time with a good book, a cup of coffee and a couple of dolliehs playing models to my daughter and her art (She likes drawing pictures of them. Maybe, they're her Muses? ). We have our own BLOG. Please visit us at the House of Nyan by clicking this link or our sig above. See you there. baldylox Posted February 14, 2013 Do you use your DD as a source of creative inspiration and if so, why do you use them? Yes I do. For me, they gave me more desire to express myself with my photography. I've always enjoyed taking pictures but I never thought too much about composition, balance, lighting or anything else concerning my photos. I always just pointed my camera at something, pressed the button and moved on. Now I have to think thru a photo shoot to setup backgrounds for stories and keep things clear if I don't want them seen, I have to think about placement, lighting, spacial distances, foregrounds, etc, etc. It's way more creative than I had once thought. And my biggest thing about the DD's and photography is making photostories. Those are what really let my imagination and creativity go crazy. The girls allow me to create stories and settings I'd never have thought about before. They give me a reason to have more fun with them. They allow me to have backstories for my girls as individuals as well as sisters and family. I can basically think of anything and make it happen in a story. THAT is difficult with other mediums. So yeah, my girls definitely are my creative outlet. Without them I'd have no real way of being as imaginative or creative as I am with them. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
kitsykat Posted February 15, 2013 I guess I do, especially for photography. They make great photography subjects and models for new clothes. I also was thinking about basing the main character in a story on Ari's looks and character. Like others said, she isn't my only inspiration, but I'm glad she's there to help! Averis Posted February 15, 2013 One of the main reasons I got into this hobby was due to the customization factor. Even for just the simple things like changing the wig and eyes. For me they represent characters that I think up. I usually only seek out a girl for a character I have in mind. Though, sometimes, one may spark a character idea as well. I hope to someday get a project going involving those characters that they represent. It has been something I've been "musing" over for a while now.
SchroedingersCat Posted February 16, 2013 You know, until I read this thread it never even occurred to me to convert any of my own characters (I used to play and host a LOT of RPGs) but now I can't stop thinking about it. I hav a sneaking suspicion that you guys are going to cost me a lot of money You can always choose to limit yourself. That's what I did. I decided to only make one character as a DD for my characters I write stories about. It would cost too much to make my whole core group of 5. Especially because the other 4 are guys. It would take Volks SDs or Iplehouse resins to make them have the look they should. DD guys won't cut it for them for me. Really not feeling like spending that much for a Volks or Iplehouse resin. ...though I do have 4 of the 5 as figures, printed by one of those 3D printer companies. One of those includes the girl I turned into a doll. Are you ready to rock? ^_^

Once you get a DD, you 'pop' the proverbial can and you can't stop at just one. Makes me think of the Borg. "Resistance is futile." So beware the custom. I for one am already suffering because juu-yuuki did a custom Kirito. Am now saving up for head to make into a boy and get his outfit and stuff. Argh!!! We have our own BLOG.
