Juu-Yuki's Repair Corner- Asuna's Wig

Okay, this is not really a repair tutorial because the wig is not broken or damaged. I will just be restyling it to match Asuna's hairstyle. I know Volks is planning on releasing an Asuna DD, but truthfully I am not interested in her wig. Volks limited wigs tend to be made from poor fibers that can't withstand heat and over time, it will be impossible to control the frizz. This is why I am making my own from heat resistant fibers. Not to mention it is a beautiful colour.

What you will need:

- Heat protector spray

- Comb

- Clear elastics

- Your wig

- Straightening iron

- Scissors

You can find all if not most of this stuff at Walmart.

The clear rubber band is not showing very well, so here is a closeup photo.

DSC_2554_zps28a74a36.jpg

Heat up your iron. I will be using the max setting for this iron because I find it works much faster than low heat.

DSC_2561_zps34a85f4f.jpg

This is the wig I will be working with. It is beautiful and has a mix of orange, pink and blond, perfect for Asuna. It doesn't look very Asuna right now though. We will have to fix those curls.

DSC_2562_zps81d84f23.jpg

Spray your heat protector on the wig.

DSC_2563_zps0d71b2d2.jpg

Comb through it a couple times.

DSC_2565_zps7b66e9e2.jpg

My iron is ready. Before we can begin working on large chunks, I am going to test to see how much heat the wig can take. Test on a strand you won't be seeing/ needing. If the wig melts, stop read this tutorial. You will need to straighten that wig with water instead, which we are not covering in this tutorial. If the hair gets frizzing and dry, lower the heat.

DSC_2570_zps0f018f29.jpg

Divide up the hair. I divided mine into two layers, but it is up to you really.

DSC_2573_zps5a46f3a4.jpg

Clamp the iron down and pull in the direction of the hair with an even speed. Do not stop, or else you are going to crimp your hair. Run the iron over as many times as you need to. It normally takes me 2-3 runs to get it straight.

DSC_2575_zps8e49c001.jpg

Straighten everything on that layer. I curled the ends in to make it look neater. Oh god... I see a stain on Sakura's butt. Will need to treat that when I have time. Vinyl.....

DSC_2577_zps1fd60801.jpg

Let down the next layer and continue.

DSC_2580_zps75eec075.jpg

Done =]

Will continue with the styling tomorrow.

Back~ Sorry for the change in lighting.

Since Asuna has braids on either side of her head, I will be making those now. I can simply braid the hair and pull it back. The problem with this is that the wigcap will show. I also want to be able to re-braid the hair easily if I have to, so I will be making them separate pieces. I don't want to buy another wig, so I took wefts off the wig itself. Take it from the bottom or middle, you won't even notice it was there to begin with .

DSC_2601_zpsb6789ebd.jpg

Take the weft and sew it together like this, so it is one long narrow strip.

DSC_2604_zps0afea4f1.jpg

Make two of these. This is what it looks from the back and front. My sewing skills aren't the best so excuse the messiness.

DSC_2606_zps88e5c4d1.jpg

Now sew it onto the wig cap, where ever you want it.

DSC_2607_zps4a7558ce.jpg

Braid and style. You can find braiding tutorials on youtube if you don't know how to do it. There are different braids you can do like the angel wing braid and the fishtail braid. Choose whichever one you like.

DSC_2608_zpsdd52522f.jpg

Now, measure how long you want the ponytail to be.

DSC_2614_zpsfaf12f4d.jpg

I am using a pair of regular scissors for this. Chop it off vertically and clean up the blunt edges.

DSC_2617_zpsfafdfbd9.jpg

Style the ends so it doesn't fan. I used gel and my straightener for this. Last step is to fix the frizz with a comb and some water. You can use Volk's hair spray if you want it to hold a bit better.

DONE!

Wow that is really cool O___O. I think I should try something like that someday to get rid of some curls on a wig that I just want to chuck at the wall lol.

And you are such a tease~ xD. I really want to see who your Asuna is and what she looks like! And the last two pics are so cute, despite that huge, distracting heart on her face . Can't wait for the reveal!!

Where'd you get that wig? Love the variagated color, so I'm curious if they have a brighter golden blond that might work for an upgrade for Agatha.

I also like the idea of taking wefts from elsewhere on the wig! Wish I'd thought of that with Agatha's current wig, though it's getting too frizzy now for it to be really worth the trouble. ^^;

Very impressive work as always! I can't wait to see who Asuna will be.

Your work with wigs seem to be very experienced, do you do this to all of your wigs? Styling and customizing them, I mean.

I had two questions if you don't mind~

1) How do you take the wefts off a wig? Sorry I'm very inexperienced with wigs. >___<

2) What brand is that wig? It takes heat very well, it seems.

Thank you for this cool tutorial!

Lol, go for it Nkei. It's very easy, especially if you have straighten your own hair .

Hahaha the huge heart is an add on from photobucket. I was too lazy to blur it out or something Oh well, it does the job.

Interesting colour choice

Had a hard time finding the right colour

I just knew I needed something orange.

Thanks guys. I got the wig off a resin BJD owner.

You can always fix the frizz Agatha, if it is a heat resistant wig. It will just take a bit more time.

Hey Neko~

Ummm... never thought about this, but ya. I customized all my wigs. Some of them I just restyle it a bit with a comb and some water, others I completely remade it with my irons and scissor.

1) There is a special sewing tool that I use to cut up the thread holding the wefts in. I don't know what you call it exactly. But my mom sews and I just borrow it from her.

2) I am not sure O.O, got it off someone else. It feels like the same fiber that Leeke uses.

Oh, this is helpful! I've got a grey wig where I love the color, but hate the curls -- they get so messy and tangly and BAD! Maybe I'll try this out this weekend...

And for a photo reference... here is one kind of seam ripper (and a pre-faceup Tama!):
