Today is just too nice of a morning to go to work. =(

Here's a picture of Reese in her new hat.

 

I make most of my gal's hats using Jessica DeBuck's Hat Tutorial and I put up how I made this one on me blog if that helps anyone who'd like to make one for their girls.

This is one of those random photos I didn't expect to get nor did I *want* to get it. When I was outside with Yukino doing photos in the backyard ( seen here: viewtopic.php?f=27&t=6485 ) she had a slight mishap.

 

I had her hanging upside down off a branch and as I backed up and was looking thru my veiwfinder to snap the photo, her top half came loose and fell to the ground....

And this wasn't an "after it happened" pic either, I took that right as she fell apart! I sure didn't expect her top to slip loose like that.... I'm just happy she wasn't hurt or damaged from her fall. She landed on the back of her head and her wig protected her head from any marks from the concrete. As you can see in the picture by her position, she was just starting to fall towards me after she landed.... her left hand isn't even touching the ground yet.

okay i know i'm late to this, but i actually think i have have something good to add to this (and since i only joined the day before yesterday ...)

 

I do like this hat and the tutorial, but with this method and material you are always stuck with flat topped hats.

 

if you'd wanted to make a hat with a round crown you could use stiff felt, (i'm not sure if it's the felt that i mean in dutch it goes by form felt (direct translation)....) this is felt stiffened with something and when you make it wet it becomes plyable and you can stretch it over your dolls head (cover in clingfilm before doing this and keep the wig on else it can end up beeing to tight to fit)

 

and apperently you can make felt stiff yourself by taking one part water and one part white glue (childrens glue i know there is an english/american brand that is mostly used but any cheap white craft glue will do)

and spread that over the felt until the felt is wet. (do this after the next step is finished)

i have never done this myself but when doing a quick search for the correct name of the felt i found this method)

 

when the felt is wrapped around the head tie it with a string a little bit lower then where you want the crown of the hat to end (so if it has to sit on the top of the ears tie it below the earlobes and nose) After that you can try to smoothe down the last creases by pulling on the felt and it doesn't matter if you don't get all the creases out just try to make them as small as possible, because you have tied the string lower than it should be for the crown of the hat you'll probably snip most of the creases of when you cut the felt to size.

 

Now let the felt dry completly. (this can take a few days)

and after the felt has dried you can remove the form of the head and cut it to the height you want is to be.

after that you can add a rim out of soft felt if you want it to be floppy or out of stiffend felt if you want a hat with a wide brim or perhaps something like a tri-corn. Do this the same way as in the suggested tutorials and sew a ribbon around the part where you have joined the rim with the crown)

 

if you'd wanted to shape the rim in an intricate way it's best to shape before you sew the brim onto the crown because you'd have to wet the brim and in doing so you could spil over the crown and ruin it, because when stiffned felt gets wet it wil loose it's shape.
