DDdy bust mod?

You can replace it whole with a DD-L or even smaller one.

The busts are hollow and the material is fairly thin. If you tried to sand them down to reduce the size, you'd end up with two large holes. Like Kumi said, you can replace it with a smaller bust -- I have an M bust on my DDdy body.

Hmm... you've just inspired me to try it! LOL

The nipples are fairly easy to sand without causing holes at least. I sanded the nipples on Lisette, on the right. It is a DD3 L-bust. The DDdy nipples aren't much larger.

 

I love the curvaceous look of the large bust and shapely L-bust on Dollfie Dreams, but one of the things that irks me is the extremely obvious nipples that can poke through most outfits! Call it a crazy girl thing, but I wouldn't walk out

so it's not a look I care for on my dolls either!

 

I've been meaning to try sanding down the nipples on a bust piece for a while, and got around to trying it today after reading this discussion.

 

So here are a couple of busts that I have laying around that I wanted to experiment with. On the left is a DDdy3 normal bust, and on the right is a DD2 L-bust. Upon inspecting the inside of the busts I noticed that the nipples are not hollow, so I could get away with some sanding without damaging the bust piece.

 

Since I have several L-busts I decided to work with that one first, just in case anything went wrong o_0" but in terms of nipple size and prominence they are about the same.

 

I'm using my nail-art rotary tool (since it's what I have!) for sanding, but any rotary tool with an adjustable speed would work. Of course, sanding by hand is also an option! I also brought out my dust-eater fan since I didn't want to be inhaling vinyl dust, and I wore a mask for this process. Safety first!

 

Here I've sanded off the point of the nipple -

 

Working slowly here I've sanded off most of the nipple. At first I thought I would just remove the pointy bit, but then it looked like there was a giant mosquito bite or welt on the breast! Yikes! So I kept sanding to smooth that out- lol!

 

To restore the smooth finish to the vinyl, I sanded the bust using some super fine sandpaper. It looks a bit gross because I re-used some leftover pieces from hubby's KOS-MOS sword project. The coarser (darker) sandpaper is 1500 grit and the super-fine is 2000 grit.

 

Just so you can see how prominent the nipples are - here's a profile shot!

 

And the top view (excuse my messy workspace!) after sanding -

 

Next I repeated the same process on the other nipple.

 

Now to see how the bust looks with clothes on - because that's the whole point of this venture! ^__^"

 

This style of tank top that Sakura was modelling yesterday is nice and stretchy, but even with her modest M-bust her nipples were showing through -

 

Here's Sidonie modelling the same top in a different colour. See how nicely it clings to her curvy body? And no pointy nipples!

 

 

It's a matter of personal taste how much of the nipple that you want to sand off. I don't mind having the nipples on a few of my bust pieces, but for some outfits I'd like to have a smoother fit so I may modify a couple more L-busts and even an M-bust. Work slowly and with care, but don't worry that you'll be left with a hole where the nipple once was! Haha!

I think you did a great job sanding the nipples off, Archangeli. I think that it looks nicer for form-fitting clothing, as demonstrated in your example photos.

For clarification, I was talking about trying to reduce the actual cup size -- for many BJDs, the busts are solid, so you can just reduce their cup size by sanding them down (people even do girl --> boy mods by removing the breasts entirely and reshaping the chest into "pecs"). But not quite an option with the DD girls so much...

For note? If you don't have some sort of power sander it takes several hours to sand to the same level.

 

Lisette's took around 3 hours to do by hand.

Archangeli, your girls look so nice in those tops! Where did you get them from? I love that style shirt and that one has a great color and fit. I'd love to have one or two of those for my girls.

I think it makes a huge difference with form-fitting tops - it can mean the difference between something looking super cute or kind of trashy

LOL this is the only "power tool" I use regularly since I apply and maintain my own gel nails! I've gotten used to functioning with my crazy nails since they are super strong.

Ah! I see what you meant! I've been following one of friends mod a resin girl into a boy too, it just didn't click in my brain!

Since I'm kind of on a roll, I sanded down an M bust and a DDdy bust today. The M-bust took longer than the DDdy and L bust because after sanding off the nipple I had to reshape the bust a bit so that it didn't look kind of... triangular

 

 

The results speak for themselves! Rin doesn't look "cold" anymore wearing that top!

 

I have DDDY in transit, and I have been thinking about preforming this... procedure! ^__^ As I don't really like the "I'm freezing" look lol. I'm so glad you posted this, Thanks

And I'm totally getting one of those nail dust collectors, that's a perfect size for DD-scale work. I don't have power tools but I can get reduction mods done quickly by carving off large parts with a utility knife and then sanding

I agree about the headlights on full bright thing- but I am also a female so it's kind of a girl thing I guess?

Aw man - I'm so considering doing this over the weekend. Having a DDdy is great (b/c it's just so curvy! ) but geeeeez she's flashing the highbeams all the time no matter how thick the material. I only hope Lowes or Home Depot has the sandpaper in that high of a grit - or maybe hobby lobby.. so glad you guys posted pictures -- gives me a reason to use my dremel.. XD

Wow the modding on the nipples makes such a difference. I might have to consider trying this when my girls arrive. If not sanding them completely off at least to lessen them a bit.

I'm in Australia, I tried our hardware store bunnings warehouse but the highest grade they had for sandpaper was 1200. The helpful worker there suggested I go to super cheap auto or repco (auto/car shop) and they had some 1500 and 2000 sandpaper ^-^
