Lucas DDH-05 Boy {June 16 pic update}

Sometime last summer I started thinking about the second boy I wanted to work on. Tamayuki has been so much fun and I really enjoy the challenge of making DD sized boy dolls. For quite a few months I had tried to settle on either an SQ Labs head or an Obitsu to pull of the mischievous look I wanted for Lucas. I honestly wasn't happy with having an off-topic doll because all of our DD stories get so intertwined that I think of who they are, not what they are.

 

The biggest challenge with Lucas is needing an eye shape that is more angular rather than the very rounded style of most DD heads. When the pre-painted 05 was first announced I almost completely ignored it, with the faceup being so heavy looking it's no surprise. Luckily I quickly noticed that the eyes were almost exactly what I was looking for and may only need a little modding. SakuraSylph has my deepest gratitude for being so kind and persistent, allowing me to start on Lucas many months before I thought it would even be possible. I know I teasingly complain but your efforts to expand my family are greatly appreciated.

 

Ok, now onto the project!

 

Basic Concept:

 

 

Lucas is the soft-hearted bad boy type, and I'd love to make him similar to this pic. I am not trying to remake this character. The facial expression, the body type, the impression of the clothing, and his hair is what I notice the most. I really love the 'devil may care' attitude, especially when Lucas as a soft spot for adorable things. (I bet a few of you can guess where this is going to lead. )

 

Head:

 

 

I will have some pictures of the blank 05 head up within a few days. I spent quite some time scrubbing off the default faceup yesterday, and I can say I'm truly amazed at what the base sculpt looks like. Even though it took more time than I would have liked, I really enjoyed scrubbing it off. I don't know if I've seen a more heavily painted head from Volks, in person or in pics. The cheek blushing was not subtle, but almost seemed to be a shade of neon pink. I would have taken pics beforehand but I got so excited at discovering the sculpt underneath that I couldn't wait.

And for comparison's sake, here is what it looks like on the Obitsu 45cm body:

 

 

I am really amazed at how drastically different this sculpt looks without the faceup. Even more now I wish I had the funds to get lots of the limited heads, remove the faceup, and get good pics of the actual sculpts. Lucas has been standing by my computer since I finished scrubbing his face, and every time I look at him I'm amazed all over.

 

Modding:

 

I'm still debating on if I want to mod the eye holes or not, I'll know better once I can play with the photos in Photoshop and Illustrator. The upper lip is definitely going to be sanded down some, and other mouth modifications may result. I can truthfully say that without the goofy lipstick and the very heavy painted line inside the mouth (not shown in the above pic but easily visible in the 2nd 05 Sculpt post) this sculpt has a very sweet looking mouth! So much could be done with it to make it so much more lovely than the "painted lady" default.

 

Faceup/expression:

 

 

 

I will be doing his faceup because I already know the exact look I want and I don't want to punish Anouc trying to get it right. Lucas will definitely have the sexy smirk thing going on. Despite thinking he's a big tough guy, he's really a charmer when he wants to be.

 

Body:

 

Obitsu 55cm Macho chest (NSFW link- naked body)

 

Currently I have Lucas' head on the 45cm boy body and in my opinion he looks freakishly small. His head looks too big on it (for a boy) even though the sculpt is drastically smaller than the DDH-07. Once he has some hair he would look even more out of proportion. So I'm really glad that I had the 45cm body to be sure that the 55cm is the one I wanted. I know I could attempt a DD hybrid body, but after Tama-chan's body adventures I don't find it fun at all doing body hunting and ending up with 2 bodies for 1 DD. Sure I've found a use for it (much to Rainie's delight) but I found the whole process aggravating and I got lucky that the 45cm boy bust fits so well on the MDD body.

 

The only thing I've been a bit concerned about is the color difference between the bust and the body in the site pics. If there is that drastic of a difference I'll deal with it, but I keep hoping the color match is better.

 

Eyes:

 

I'm leaning most towards Parabox realistic eyes in Green Gray At the moment he has some 16mm eyes that were given to me, and I was shocked to discover that they cover the eye holes with no noticeable gaps. The only problem is the pupils are a bit small, giving him the slightly creepy blank doll stare so I'm going to get him 18mm eyes. For my boys (with the exception of Ralph so far) I really prefer them to have the realistic eyes instead of the animetic eyes to make the further visual distinction between the guys and girls.

 

Hair:

 

 

 

This is going to be one of the most challenging parts. I know I could make it easy on myself and do either a fur wig or a mohair one, but with two cats in the house I could easily see myself having to regularly take the cat hairs out. That's something I don't find thrilling. So instead I'm going to use the chance to see if I can stand making my own DD wigs from heat resistant hair! Yay? Yay!

 

From the two above options I really like the top one the best, but the other one has the headband thing that would make it super easy to cover the hair line. Any suggestions along these lines would be great to hear.

 

Update!

 

 

He may be ticked at me, and it isn't a very impressive pic but I'm starting on the pattern for his headcap. This simple thing was one piece that I didn't want to do until I got his hair figured out. So what does this mean? For me it means that THE most difficult part of this entire project is solved and I'm entirely pleased with what has resulted so far. In fact it is the solution to all of my boy hair troubles. *does an extended happy dance* I'm hoping to have finished hair pics to post in about two weeks (or less) if everything keeps going smoothly.

 

Clothes:

 

 

 

I have to say that these are not my normal preferred clothing styles, but it's what works for Lucas. He's not going to have the saggy-ass pants like the guy in the first pic, but I love the layered hoodies. I'm making it easy on myself and buying some jeans from Parabox so he won't start out naked. I can get pants figured out eventually but I don't think having a naked boy prancing around the house would be a good idea for a few reasons. It will be fun to work on the rest of his clothes this summer.

Thank you everyone for the nice comments! This is the first time I've had so many reference pictures for what I'm doing. In some ways it makes me just as interested as everyone else to see how Lucas turns out. Even Raven made mention today about how much like a boy the sculpt looks. I never really expected to have more than one boy, but now with 4 started and many more to consider, I'm looking forward to creating a DD boy army. It is just a thrilling challenge to discover the sculpts that work, but the 05 head has been the biggest surprise so far. We have been talking about Lucas for a long time now so it is exciting but a bit nerve wracking seeing him finally being worked on. If someone made either a boy or girl 05 DD and dyed it green, it would make an excellent alien!

 

I finally had the time, energy, and sunlight to take some initial photos of the blank 05 head. No modding has been done yet. Photos have been added to the 'head' section of the first post.

 

The more I look at these photos, the more I wonder a couple of things. #1: Do I really need to do any modding (sanding down the upper lip just a little) #2: Do I really want 18mm eyes, or should I just stick with the 16mm? I'd love to hear what you think!

Oh, he does look pretty good so far. I'm curious what you'll decide to do with the mouth. I think the eyes he has in look pretty good, but not having the pupils touching the upper eyelids makes him a bit starey. Tamayuki gets away with it since his eyes are such a dark blue. I can't tell though, because of the high domes, whether they can be tilted up more without making gaps. That's why I hate high dome realistic eyes. But of course that's just my opinion.

That's kinda what I thought too, but I've been looking at him so often that my perception has been getting somewhat skewed. I tried tilting the eyes up and it just makes him look pissed off, something I would not like. I'll be ordering his eyes within the next couple of weeks or so, but at the moment it has been mildly confusing that the 16mm are the closest I have to the size I want. The next nearest size I have I think is a 20mm or 22mm and that's not helpful at all. Also I don't want blue eyes for him either. I think the green would look great, plus I couldn't resist 'green-eyed monster' jokes.

Ahhh... green-eyed monster. I just hope Kaylus doesn't read that or he might just make Lucas' eyes go greener. Afterall, he considers Tamayuki his Lil' Bro. But back to the eyes, I agree, he needs different ones. As for his lips, maybe just a little bit on the upper lip like you mentioned? Anyway, I like how the 05 looks without a face-up. I can't believe how much more masculine that sculpt looks without its default face-up. Can't wait to see him finished. Maybe you can show us a photoshop mock-up?

I'm sure Kaylus will have a ton of fun at Lucas' expense, green eyes or not.

 

I have to admit it has been really exciting 'discovering' this sculpt. Once I started to mildly pay attention to the initial pics, I really wasn't sure if it would ever work for Lucas. All I knew is that I had really hoped that the eyes were the shape they seemed to be (with the eye color and eye makeup it was hard to tell) and the mouth was at least close enough. Even then I didn't know if the cheeks were going to be too rounded and puffy. Even looking at the original pics next to the ones I took today, I can't believe its the same head. How can Volks be so entirely bad at taking photos? Another thing that I have been wondering, if the more 'mature' a sculpt is does that mean it might work better for a boy? That's hard to say because the eye shape has so much to do with it as well.

 

I was definitely going to post the mockups once I got them done. It has been glorious to have Spring Break this week and have time for my brain to finally relax. And of course I've been working on a bunch of projects simply because I can.

 

My goal is to have Lucas finished by the end of the summer. I'm not expecting any major issues with the wig (once I get it figured out) or his faceup and those are the two most difficult pieces. Everything else should be here within the next month.

Finely, finely, FINALLY I have update pictures!

 

First off I'm so happy that the 05 head works GREAT for a guy. The only modding I did was reduce the 'peak'(?) of his upper lip, tried not to alter his nose at all, and took a tiny chunk out of the right side of his mouth to make his smirk work more easily.

 

 

The eyes he has are only temp and he will eventually have green eyes but his faceup is done! At least I think it is.

 

 

I kinda hate pictures of the faceups so up close, it's like being caught with your pants down. All of the tiny imperfections are magnified and look like huge issues. With so many accomplished faceup artists on the forums it's hard not for me to feel intimidated by my rinkydink attempts. Personally I'm thrilled with him.

 

I really try to avoid the additional painted lines on sculpted mouths because it is very difficult to not have it look weird from some angles. With Lucas' smirk it just couldn't be helped, without them he just looked pissed off. I tried the mouth corner lines when I was doing Tamayuki's faceup and it turned him instantly creepy. That was also the moment I discovered that a wet wooden toothpick works as a very fine point scrubber. Even though Lucas has some angles that look strange to me, overall I'm surprised that he has as wide range of expressions as he does.

 

His eyebrows took some figuring out. They were painted easily enough, but being so prominent and thick, I had to do something so it didn't look like he had nori eyebrows. Before I added the little lines, the eyebrows just dominated his face really badly. The lines around his eyes are pretty dark/heavy but they are also that way in many of the reference pictures I was using. Since I tend to have a bit of an affection for goths and he is partially based on my favorite band/music Breaking Benjamin, I figured it works just fine. Plus Lucas doesn't seem to have an issue with the dark fairy stereotype.

 

His hair is still going to be a major pain in the rear so the first wig I'm going to get him is going to look silly. It will make sense with his intro story, but it definitely not going to be cool hair. This will give me the chance to figure out his hair without waiting until it's perfect before he's done.

I love how you made the 05 head look so different so much so that I never realized it could be awesome for a DD boy. like I mentioned before, I am really loving his eyebrows, it makes him look very 'manly'. I can't wait to see him in full, with wig, body, outfit and all and also to learn more about his character and how he comes to your household and how he develops his fondness for Tama.

Lucas had been floating around in my head for about 4 months before the 05 was released so when I saw it I knew exactly who it was for. The default faceup to say the least was not even remotely my preference and I scrubbed it off before I even remembered to take pictures. Even though modding the upper lip didn't really remove much vinyl, it made such a huge difference in making it suitable for a boy.

 

I've got a bit more saving up to do before I can order his body, eyes, shoes, ect. but since his intro story starts on Thanksgiving I'm doing what I can to get him done before then. My husband and I decided that Thanksgiving is when we see how big our family has grown in the last year even though its more busy for us than Christmas. Having Lucas walk into all that chaos is going to be fun.

Thank you! The last time I painted was last August so it really isn't frequent enough to get my hands to be steady. But even though I'm rather critical about my own faceups when they are done, it is usually to make sure there's nothing left to fix. It doesn't take me very long to stop seeing all the flaws unless they are actual errors.

 

HOLY COW! That second link is really amazing! It really gives me a couple of ideas that I hadn't thought of before that are hugely helpful! Proper male hairstyles are really a lot harder to do correctly on dolls than most girl's hair. I'm just not a big fan of the standard anime guy hair style that makes them look like they stood out in the rain (all down in their face).

Woops, sorry Katnaper I didn't see your post when I was typing mine up. Personally I think because of the eye shape it is one of the easier heads to use for a guy. The default faceup makes it very misleading. The manly eyebrows crack me up because I keep hearing Dolly say, "See those eyebrows? Those are MANLY eyebrows!" I remember when I was asking people's thoughts on Tama's faceup and the biggest 'complaint' was that his eyebrows were not thick enough for a boy. Poor Tama tries so hard be manly in his own way but he never quite seems to realize how girly he looks. So with Lucas I really wanted there to be the big distinction and also to show that I know what a guy should look like.

 

As for the wig that he's going to start out with, every time I think about it I start cracking up because it looks so goofy! I don't really know if it will even be used for him after he gets a second wig but I just find it too funny. Maybe it can go into Naiomi's theater supplies or Ringo's spy kit.

Thank you Anouc, it really means a lot coming from you! I just wish my hands didn't wiggle so much when I'm trying to paint. One of these times I might do a girl using just the watercolor pencils.

I was thinking about this last night and I can actually say I'm pretty proud to have so many boys. If you are just counting male heads, I have 4 (Tamayuki, Ralph, Lucas, & Kiyoteru) and another on layaway. I can say I technically have 2 boys finished if Tama-chan goes back to using the sanded S bust and Ralph is on the Obitsu 45cm body. Ralph is just waiting for his hair to grow out.

 

One of the things I did find interesting about doing Lucas is that the jaw is pretty defined so I added a bit more shading to make it even more so.

 

 

It is actually less noticable when you aren't staring straight at it, but it does help the jaw line not to fade because of the lighting. I think that the shading I do drives me batty because it is so very hard to get the subtleness to show in the photos normally. (These ones are a bit oversaturated.) Especially the cheeks because boys don't have brighter pink cheeks, they just have darker tan ones. Normally the lights and/or camera wash it out no matter what I do.

Thanks! I just realized that if I put him on a DDS body with a modded S bust that he could still be Volks, Kiyoteru on a DD, and Tamayuki, Ralph, & Eddie on MDD bodies and submit all boy pics to the Volks blog! I wouldn't keep them on the bodies permanently (although they would need majorly modded busts) but it would be SO worth it! Then they could also invade the Volks USA store! That actually sounds pretty awesome!
