What are some good names for your dolls?

Recommended Posts

JapanLover

Hi! I'm very new to the doll world, and I'm already in love with the hobby. I'm just wondering, what would you name your doll ( since most of you already have names what other good names do you like). I just want something unique for the dolls name and something that has a "pop" to it. But enough about me... What names do you like! Feel free to list a couple if you just can't think of one.

I name based off character, mostly. Agatha and Nanoha are both based on existing characters, from a webcomic and an anime respectively, so they basically inherited those names. For original characters, I try to pick one that fits their personality and/or back story, so sound and meaning are important there. (For historical characters popularity of name types during the character's birth era may also be important, which is where the Name Voyager really comes in handy. The site's corresponding blog is also fascinating, as the writer often goes into *why* certain names ebb and flow in use.) You do have more flexibility in choosing a name for a DD than for a person, as they can't complain if people tell them their name is weird,

Edit: Given your parameter for "pop", you may find these two blog entries interesting. (And the second entry's title gave me the weird thought of "Exotica" as a DD name. XD)

Is this for a name your own doll? If so, then I find it best to just let the name find you if that makes sense

Sometimes I have a naming scheme from a favorite show or I choose a name I really like.

Rise kept her sculpt name as I love her character and I tried to make a custom Rise once.

Rise, Rise #2, Kasumi - Rise x 3// Ritsuko - 2B // Momo - M.O.M.O. // Nayuki -Mikuru // Romi - 09 // Makoto - Sailor Jupiter // Mikasa - DD07 (WIP) // Akechi - DDH-25

Since the DD's are made in Japan, I kind of prefer Japanese names for them. I also have a big soft spot for girls names that start with "M".... I have quite a few of those.

Manami

Miyuki

Mai

Mamimi

Mashiro

Minako

But I do have a few girls with non-Japanese names like:

Elisabeth

Sprout

Saber

Katerina

If you're interested in Japanese names for your girls, check here:

http://www.20000-names.com/female_japanese_names.htm

It gives you names and meanings for them and it's pretty cool.

As for me, I think my favorite name for a DD ( that I don't have named this ) is Tsubaki. It just sounds so nice!

Billy

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

(Since this is about naming, I'll include my resin.)

For Dollfie Dreams, since so many are limited and represent pre-existing characters, there is a good chance I accept the given name as-is.

  • Feena
  • Estel
  • (Saber) Lily
  • (Saber) Alter
  • Rise

Sometimes I have another character for them in mind, so they get renamed... but it's still not exactly original.

  • Kirakishou
  • Sera (a.k.a. C.C.)

And in some other cases, I took a bigger role in designing them, selecting individual parts at creation and inventing an original character for them with no obvious pre-existing basis.

  • Aphrae
  • Murasaki
  • Hydrargentia ("Jen")

Aphrae is an invented name; my goal was to make a name that abbreviated nicely and sounded obviously feminine--hence, she can go by Aph, Aphi & Rae equally well. Murasaki is the Japanese word for purple, which is her dominant color scheme and an actual beautiful Japanese name besides. Hydrargentia's character was intended to be a shapeshifter with an unacceptably obvious tell, which is why doesn't bother and prefers cosplay instead; her name is from the scientific name for mercury, hydrargyrum, which hints at her nature being liquid and silver.

I have a few other invented names "in stock"; they tend to be western names since I am American. Other names I have in mind tend to be borrowed: a few other pre-existing characters, a Japanese and a Chinese name that come from actual people I know.

Anriko

All my dolls are named after long-existing characters of mine. My two DD girls - User and Anri - have names that are derived from their backstories and their continuing evolution. Do you already have a character in mind for a doll? Or do you want to let the doll tell you about its character? There's no wrong way to go about coming up with names, though I admit if I'm stuck I like to go browse name meaning sites and play with the search feature - maybe I want a certain trait? A certain origin? A meaning that makes me laugh? I've used all of them!

This isn't really a name list but if you find some names this may help you Kabalarian.com

Rather than name meaning it defines attributes that having that name gives you. It's eerie how accurate it can be. So if your looking for a certain name to fit a personality this can help!

This was my line of thinking too. My girl was originally "Arisa" but has morphed into the english version of her name "Alice" because my family couldn't pronounce the japanese well.

I had a lot of trouble with naming my girl. I know she's a character doll of Rise Kujikawa, but I still wanted to turn her into my own. D:

First I thought about naming her Skruttet, after a character in the book "Who will comfort Toffle?" But it didn't really feel like a complete name orz

In the end I named her Melina, it just felt really good and now I couldn't dream of renaming her.

My biggest advice would probably be to just try names that...feels good. When you get more dolls it should be easier because then you could try to find matching names.

Both of my kiddos are original concepts, Tana is a derivative of 74N4, her designation as a Reconnaissance Droid who doesn't know where she came from, or why she's here.

Maiko is a name I had help choosing, both from Poofiemus and Balldylox, along with Billy's link:

http://www.20000-names.com/female_japanese_names.htm

where I found Maiko's name.

It's worth a shot, or just think on it some more, she might just surprise you in the long run and

when you're looking at her, a name might just pop into your head.......

My custom character's name is after a character I created years ago. Her nickname came first (Kaycee) and the meaning behind it (it's supposed to be a prettier spelling of her first and middle initials of her name, K and C). I'm not sure where I originally came up with the idea. But her actual first and middle names came far later.

As a writer, names just come to mind fairly easily. But if you have trouble thinking up names, there's plenty of baby and fantasy name sites out there that can help you.

Are you ready to rock? ^_^

My girl's either keep their original character names like Lucy, Lily,Mari,Sakuya, Nero and Rei. Otherwise, I gave them names that are derivative of their character names, like Reese, Suki, Beato, Teru, Millie and Eri. I kinda like to keep it simple The only ones I had to think up names for are my resins but they too are based of characters I like.

For the girls I have, they were both named while I was just looking at them. Their names just kinda came to me, and then stuck. For my Obitsu, I had her named long before she actually arrived, but my resin girl took more time, she was with me for a couple of weeks before her name happened.

Nah, I still call her Arisa and I introduce her as such to people in the DD and anime communities. For my grandmother however, Alice was easier to say.

I think I'll get them a japanese name.

Not sure yet, still waiting for my first DD but I can't imagine a DD with a european name >-<

That's a bit silly since there are DDs with european names as their official names, for example:

Lucy

Maria

Fate

Louise

Melty

Alice

Millhiore

Illyasviel

Erika

Al

OT: I usually chose a name based on my dolls' design. If I want them to have japanese clothing(japanese school uniforms, kimonos etc)and origins I'll use a japanese name. Although all my dolls right now have western or fantasy names; Tetheriel, Moira and Genma. And soon I'll have a Luka in my family too.

I came up with my girls' name before I got them. XD

For both my girls, I just came up with a name, and then it stuck.

For Lucy, my Melty girl, I just though the name would fit, even if Migon didn't think so.

I tried really hard to come up with a new name, even right after she had arrived, but I was so used to the name Lucy by then, I just couldn't change it.

And she also got the perfect nickname.

"Lucy Loose Legs".

it's maybe because I have several Super dollfie. The basic name of the DD are like molds name to me, not really the name of the doll, even if it's an existing character.

They look like manga characters to me, so only japanese names seems to fit for me. It's a personal choice I guess. I don't really understand why it is silly. I never said it was bad to have an european name, but I can't imagine giving that kind of name to my DD.

I don't think there are "good" or "bad" names for DD. The most important thing is that you like the name and enjoy your doll with it.

Sometimes I kept the original name, sometimes I changed it. Most of my DD have japanese names and most of my resins have european names. I don't know why but I did it like that. Just a matter of taste I suppose

I agree with aeris, A big part of this hobby is a bit of artistic license. However, I have always liked the names "Margot" or "Meagan"

Anything you like is good enough~ There are people that come up with "themes" for the names they give their dolls. (I've seen sweets, precious metals/stones and colors done before). And then there are the more usual lot that name their dolls because they simply happen to like the name, or they find out it fits the doll/character.

I'm one of these people, and among my entire doll collection there are names from nearly every place imaginable (and some I made up myself, even). I don't go by themes, but for my Dollfie Dreams in particular I've decided to always go with Japanese names since they share the same origins in the story we're writing with my best friend.
