My Faceup Journey Update: 12/31/13

My summer break started last week and I had been looking forward to practicing face ups so I could repaint Mikuru. I figured I'd start a journal

 

I had purchased the 01 head and luckily had face up supplies from when I practiced a couple times on a previously owned resin doll.

 

The goal of this post is to dobleepent my journey from a complete noob to a hopeful faceup artist

 

Here's what I've got so far. I'll post a picture or two along with commentary. Comments, advice, tips, words of encouragement are greatly appreciated. I should mention that I did each eye as a different style ! After Attempt 4 I plan on practicing making them the same.

 

Attempt #1:

Comments: Pretty sloppy, right? I had no knowledge of adjusting the paint consistency and adding layers. It was very cakey

 

Attempt #2:

Comments: Still very cakey, but a bit better brush control. I used watercolor pencil on both brows, but practiced filling in the eyebrow with paint on one. I also tried cheek highlights, but I should've mixed red with terra cotta, not white...

 

Attempt #3:

Comments: While still cakey, I had an easier time with layering the paint. I didn't do the lips, oops! The water color pencil ended up staining after this attempt...

 

Attempt #4:

Comments: I'm really proud of this faceup attempt! I layered the paint from a terracotta + burnt umber blend up to a darker blend with a bit of black. Way better paint consistency as well. I still suck at the lips and eyebrows, but I'm working towards it. I only showed the left eye as it's way nicer than the right

 

No more updates for now.

The last eye is very well done ... Would the other look the same, than it would be perfect ^_^

Newest faceup :3 There was one more that I have some photos of. I left my camera cord at school so this is a cell phone photo, but I finally have the paint consistency problems somewhat figured out haha.

 

Unfortunately, the flash and cell phone quality kinda are blah But I think I'll repaint her again!

 

-I needed more thinner

-More layers

-Improved brush control
