Getting My First DD HELP

Recommended Posts

Cute Kana

Hello everyone!

I have been looking at Dollfie Dreams for quite a while now, and I fell in love. I will save my money to buy one, but I am not old enough to have a credit/debit card so I will use my mom's. The thing is, she usually lets me buy what I want with my money, but I'm scared that because of the price of DDs that she will not allow me to get one. Could anyone help me with what to say to her? And also, I would like to try to do my own face up on a doll, because standard models cost more and I want her to have a certain face. Do you think that is a good choice?

Thank you!

Just tell her you really really want that DD and that you'll do chores for a month LOL! I really don't know your mom, so I don't know what else you could possibly say to persuade her, but just be honest with her about how much you really want one DD. You can easily find cheaper now and then on YJA anyway (the standard models I mean)

As for face-up, I know this might sound rude or bad, but if you want her to look a specific way RIGHT AWAY, better commission someone ^ ^; First face-ups don't always turn out that nice, but if you really want to do it yourself, then go for it! Practise makes better and I know my own first face-ups were lame, but I'm lots better now and I'm continuing to improve! So just believe in yourself if you really want to do it, read a bunch of tutorials and then give it your all and even if it takes a few times, that doesn't matter~ ^ ^

Yeah, I have to go tell her, ALONE. Hopefully it goes well though! And thanks for telling me about YJA!

I just pretty much have to get used to doing face ups. But that's okay! I will like to see how I improve over time! And thank you for the advise!

Good luck with that! ^v^ And try to throw some 'only one' and 'no more I promise' in there ;D *shot*

Since you decided to do your own face-ups, you should know that you need to buy a mask, for your own good and health!! http://www.ehow.com/info_8756166_hazards-toxic-aerosol-fixatives.html

And remember to spray at least 2-3 layers (with about 20-30 minutes breaks between them to let them dry) before starting to paint so your head will be safe from stains~! ^v^

One of the best ways I've found is to be well armed with plenty of resource materials. Let your mom read some of the posts here, possibly you both could get into the hobby? (might be easier? As a parent myself, I was more acceptable to something my son was into when he had nearly overwhelmed me with information relevant to what he wanted!)

Also, find out if there are some DD owners near you, seeing some in person and meeting the owners could help immensely!

Face ups? Definitely take your time doing one, and follow as many of the tutorials you can find!

Buying in parts is almost the same as buying a standard model now. Also remember you will have to factor in the cost of face-up materials. Spray, tiny paintbrushes, thinner, paints, chalks for blushing, gloss, etc. This in itself can get costly. Also the cost of eyes, wig, clothing. If you plan on buying these items from different places there will also be multiple costs of shipping.

As a beginner and given your cirbleepstances, I would recommend a standard model which will give you everything you need at once. head with face-up, body, wig, eyes, underwear, slip.

If you really are set on a custom then try to get all your items at once to save on shipping.

As others have said face-ups takes practice, and some folks despite their best efforts, cannot produce a decent face-up. This is where commissioning a face-up artist to do it becomes another option. This is also another cost, but for many is better and more cost productive than buying a bunch of materials and still not being able to produce a decent face-up.

I would definitely make a firm plan which way you are going with this since your mom is involved. Planning will help you decide whether its one large charge to her credit card for a standard model or possibly multiple smaller charges for a custom doll.

Good luck with your goal!

As with any hobby, there are going to be costs involved. I walked into a hobby store the other day (searching for Mr. Super Clear, which they didn't have ) and experienced a little sticker shock seeing the prices on some of those model planes and model cars. As long as you keep it reasonable and are not putting yourself in the hole in order to get one, then hopefully she will come around. Good luck!

Hi,

I am new to dollfie dream too! I check ebay, mandarake, figure fm, Flickr dollfie dream pool, den of angels and volks, yahoo Japan, noppin service, rakuten websites everyday to look for new updated items. The other day I found a really good value yukino head custom on eBay and won it for $50 (shipping included in that price)which was a real bargain. I then researched this site like an obsessed otaku learning about all the different bodies and what they could offer visually and if their possibility was to my liking. I have had resin bjd's for about 8 years now so I am not new to searching for bargains. However I only really got into DD because I fell I love with an alna head I saw on Flickr and bought that. Having bought the head I had no idea whatsoever what to do with it! BJD is expensive hobby but dollfie dream is far beyond my usual price budget acceptability so much research was required to make dream possible...

Buying parts can be expensive but if you are willing to take the time and effort to search and wait for items to come up you might just find what you want. I have managed to get some good price items on mandrake and if you don't mind staining that can happen you can get a much reduced price. A little staining wouldn't bother me if on the feet for example or in the groin because and outfit can over it.

I generally have a lot of bjd parts about the place as I customise - I am unafraid of modifications when it comes to resin. Sqlab do lovely anime heads and they are resin. I have bought from sq lab about 3 times now they are lovely quality, good prices and seem to always miss customs charges! Also hybrids make things cheaper azone 50 body is amazing and good price from hobby shops. I have some vmf50 parts that work around the obitsu 50 frame and really love their quality. Amiami has azone 50 character items and outfits. I have super dollfie so having dollfie dream wasn't such a big step as they can share clothes.

Faceup is difficult on vinyl. A lot of the materials needed can be initially expensive too. They don't sell mr super clear in uk where I live so I have to import it from Japan. learning faceup can be frustrating too as it takes time to get a good handle on it. I hope you find a talent for it but I don't think investing in faceup supplies will save on costs. After the initial outlay of course it will do so if you continue to use them and develop your skills. You sound passionate and like you might have a lot of fun doing that. Customising is the best part for me and once you have the stocks there is nothing stopping you trying whatever you want. Important thing - have fun! Some people take doll hobby very seriously! Only thing I take seriously is looking for lowest prices!

I hope you can find out more about what you would like and perhaps you'll find a bargain through this website and other forums. Maybe if you write down a plan both financial and aspirations of what you hope to find for yourself in the hobby perhaps your mum would support you a bit more. I am a single mum so know that if my son has a real passion for something he wants to do then I support him 100% as I like to see the fire in his eyes and his determination. As for me my parents think dolls are a waste of money and only stopped being frustrated with me when they saw my Blythe customs sell on ebay for over £200. Suddenly they thought my hobby had a value even if they couldn't appreciate it. It was hard for them as I was supposed to go to medical school and now I have been playing with dolls for 8 years... I think anything that challenges you to be creative is something a parent will want to encourage.

Perhaps if you do extensive searching and make lists and proposals you will be able to show how committed and responsible you are. As a parent dollfie dream hobby is a bit like a nightmare because they can cost more than a holiday to somewhere tropical! I hope you use all the sites to find bargains because if you do there is no reason not to spend your own money on it even if you need your mum's permission. Compare prices always! I use amazon Japan a lot for magazines as on eBay they are inflated to a point of extortion! Sewing patterns in dolly dolly are really good and they are agood place to see pictures etc... Without buying a whole doll and give you new ideas for customising. Some of the amazon marketplace magazines are like 500¥ and if you use noppin they'll ship them to you so if you are good at sewing this can be very rewarding

Good luck!

Hi!

I am also new to all of this and planning to try my first 'face' with my brand new girl. I read over some of the advice in the forum, watched some tutorials, and figure I'll give it my best shot and see what happens! I headed out (all puns intended) to a local craft store this afternoon and was suprised that it wasn't really as costly as I feared. For under $50 (Canadian), I got a good supply of paints and fairly good brushes. It certainly seems less expensive when you don't have to pay those evil shipping charges. The only thing they didn't have was Mr. Super Clear but the sales clerk said I might find it on AMAZON so I'll be having a look there later...probably not until my girl arrives, though. Be brave and try to create your own face if you want to because trying is the only way to learn...and it can also be a lot of fun!
