Jezrah Posted September 29, 2014 I agree with Galvatim. Although I'm sure there were scalpers trying to win multiple dolls for resale, I think a lot of those who won through VolksUSA never even entered the International lottery. My two lottery wins were both through VolksUSA, and since I knew I'd already won I've so far never entered an International lottery. The dolls that were given to the US branch took some of the competition out of the International lottery, since the only US competition after that was from those who had lost or were greedy. I don't think there's necessarily less DD owners at this point. It seems more like the previously active members have gone slightly more silent and the new people join but don't always contribute to conversations. There's also a lot less commenting going on in individual threads, which may cause new people to be discouraged and post less. And maybe people are just busy. I have several photostories that I mean to do but never seem to get the time/ambition. More on topic, I don't think it's fair to have the Mikus come in the second wave or later, especially since they've been paid in full, but I can't really say I'm surprised. If Volks cared as much about the Western market, we'd already have DD boys.
foo Posted September 29, 2014 I like the new version of Mirai, but I should probably just not even enter for the memorial version, I won't win anyway. The memorial Mirai & Candy are actually pre-orders (they're just standard dolls with special outfits).

The Memorial editions pre-orders in that they'll be delivered in November, rather than October, but I think they're being sold first-come, first-serve click-war style. I don't think they're doing an open order period, the way they did with Miku. Doll Photos & Doll Jewelry Sales: Follow me on Instagram!

I'm sure I could find a nice white one piece dress somewhere else, if I want. And the shoes look like those cheap plastic ones that Volks selks for $10. I totally get being upset about the Miku delay. I preordered Hot Toys Iron Man MkXVII Heartbreaker last November, it was due in February. Ended up delayed until this November. Of course, it benefits from some upgrades the line has seen over this year, now. Too bad Volks isn't throwing in some extra for US orders
mitsuki Posted September 29, 2014 I don't see the European, Asian, South American, or any other community as not part of the collective. I have friends all over the world. I try to help them and they are kind and try to help me. There are probably more people in general trying for the lotteries. Many of them are there just for profit. It has made things really hard for everyone but there are always crooks and profiteers in everything that gets attention whether it is concert tickets, Beanie Babies, or designer jeans, etc. No matter what happens, I am grateful for the friends I have made. I wish the wait for the preorders wasn't so long. I wish there weren't more delays. MkXVII wanted to be like a Volks preorder? haha How many people would like a Black Rock Shooter DD? Shailara Posted September 29, 2014 I wouldn't be interested in BRS only because her clothes are so overly plain and her weapons aren't of interest to me. As a character she's not too difficult to make on your own. Strength on the other hand would be of great interest to me. I'd love her gloves and I think a tan MDD would be very interesting. Her clothes would be pretty plain too, but at least the rest of her not. XD (\_/) ( ' .' ) ( uu)

Godzilla44566 Posted September 30, 2014 Japanese fans may be a hardcore bunch but for how long are people going to keep buying these who already have 3 or 4? You probably don't know just how hardcore otakus can get. 2-3 DDs a year is probably from their least expenses, when you consider how much more they spend on other anime merchandise. I'm guessing a lot of them keep them in their original outfits and don't care for staining too much since they buy them to put them behind a glass / on a shelf with their other figures. I'm also guessing their number is BIG if they can control the anime industry. As a big otaku, though I can only speak for myself, you would need not only a big wallet but a big interest for these dolls to buy anywhere close to that many a year easily. Anyone who is otaku would also have a ton of other merchandise they desired to where anyone who could afford that many a year are uncommon. I have never seen anyone besides wolfheinrich and like 2 people on this forum, who had anywhere near that much. Granted they are not Japanese. I spend a great deal of time looking around on doll.fm and MFC and the max I ever see is like 8, with many customs in those bunches. Dollfie Dreams have been out a long time. Nobody is buying them on after market like that even Japanese otaku, and nobody can win every lottery but I dont doubt there are many people who enter every time one comes up. Not just the price of upkeep (you can get everything except the dolls themselves from cheap third party sellers if you're not 100% set on a specific style), but I think the size of the dolls themselves is kind of a built-in upper limit for most people. It's easy to have lots of small anime figures and even smaller dolls but DDs are two feet tall. I think most people can only have a few before they kind of feel like they're taking over your living space. I agree with this too. They take up real estate like nothing else. I would venture to say most people put this stuff in there bedrooms, how much table space do most people have? I wonder if things seem slower in the aftermarket because so many people have ordered Miku? It's kind of hard to casually add another to your collection when you know you're getting Miku later on. Every once in a while something pops up in the marketplace and I'm like (๑╹っ╹๑) but then realize, once Miku arrives I'll have a total of four dolls around if I get that, which is definitely too much. This is definitely true for me, and probably a lot of people. Especially since this release is a highly anticipated one and compared to the rather weak lottery girls that have come out, I think most people held out for Miku or are saving for there grails. Very true for me too. I have 7 DDs right now (including hybrids) and I've held off on adding any more to their numbers for almost a year now, and a big reason for that is I'm waiting for Miku. Since I've got a DD on the way, technically, I don't *need* to buy another...is the logic anyway, and it's worked pretty well. I've got 8 resin bjds too, so I really am trying to slow down how often I buy a new doll ^^; My Etsy Shop ~~~ My DeviantArt

I thought I'd chime in here as a DD collector with multiple other hobbies including figure collecting. I don't know if I consider myself an otaku since i think that might imply I'm more dedicated than I am, but I do have my fair share of scaled figures (41 with 1 on preorder) and nendoroids (47 with 2 on preorder) along with some number of trading style figures. I've now been keeping DDs for just over a year now and I have 5 full dolls and a head already! I also have Miku on order and she will be my first doll that I haven't bought on the aftermarket. I also don't really plan on stopping at a set number. I don't have a huge house either, but I prioritize the way I display my items and switch them out from time to time to keep things fresh and from becoming too cluttered. Although, since I'm not too well off (I just save up a lot and sell off items I'm not interested in anymore) the other hobbies have taken a back seat to DDs for now. I still buy the occasional figure or something for another of my hobbies but my focus right now is dolls. That will change eventually and I'll swing back to another one of my other hobbies. I tend to go in cycles with all my collectibles. Probably want to take a break from new DD but therefore I am getting into male resin BJD. Yeah the big resin 70cm BJD. I am also collecting manga, figures and stuff. It really depends on what you focus on as an otaku. Some people focus on straps, figures, dakimakura, dolls... etc. or a bit of everything It is like with doll collectors, there are many ways to be otaku! I am probably not the only one focusing on dolls at the moment
archeotech Posted October 1, 2014 I would consider myself and my girlfriend as being Otaku and DD's are more aimed at otaku. Lately we probably focus more on DD's but also collect figures and other merchandise. When we buy a DD the character is a big deciding factor. Anyway we own about 23 dolls now. I would consider that a fairly big collection. A lot of people on this forum would be some of the core fan base of DD's so might not be unusual here. I don't know what people's Max size collection would be but I think they would keep growing over time if the right characters went up for sale or they would sell some of their current collection to make way for more. I use a bunch of bookcases to display mine.
Poofiemus Posted October 1, 2014 My collection is small, 3 at home with Miku taking it to 4. I have never set a hard number cap for myself, since that never seems to work for anyone. I know my collection will eventually grow again, but I like having a slow adoption pace so I can get everyone settled in. . .just hoping the extra Miku delay won't destroy my resolve on that front. Everyone does have a different collection limit. Some people don't like more than two, others love having massive groups. However, I do stand by my sentiment that the dynamic of the Western online community's shifted a bit, and may still be shifting. It's sort of . . . mellowed? Like I mentioned before, there seems to be less reward for attention seeking, so the people who have stuck with the hobby are picking based off what they personally like, and aren't as influenced by what gets the most views as they seemed to be a couple years ago. I mean, yeah, girls like Saber Classic and Sasara do still go for a lot of money, but they're not guaranteed view pullers now. Also, is it just me, or does there seem to be somewhat less pressure for fullsets now? Seemed like early on we had a lot of "completionists" who wanted to have everything, even if they'd never use it, just on principle. Seems that tendency's relaxed a lot, so now only people who love both the head *and* the character (or the outfit) get fussy about it. I'm not as sure on that one though; that might just be in my head. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

Soenatte Posted October 3, 2014 Like I mentioned before, there seems to be less reward for attention seeking, so the people who have stuck with the hobby are picking based off what they personally like, and aren't as influenced by what gets the most views as they seemed to be a couple years ago. I mean, yeah, girls like Saber Classic and Sasara do still go for a lot of money, but they're not guaranteed view pullers now. While I agree with most of your post Poofiemus the above statement is the one I'm skeptic about. What I see is basically this: the new girls get all the attention. As soon as they're released everyone clamors to get them because everyone, or at least some popular member, wants them so they're trying to catch onto the attention/hype train which causes a big price inflation. After a small while the balloon bursts, a newer doll comes along and the price bubble deflates before moving to the newest girl yet again. It also makes the aftermarket infuriating because most girls will not sell even after a generous pricedrop most of the time and they remain to rot unsold in the homes of people who bought them on a whim and not to keep them. I won't argue there are people picking their dolls for their personal preferences as I consider myself to be among them as being, primarily, a doll collector to begin with, I just don't quite believe this to be the general rule. That being sad.. I regret ordering my Miku so late... -~- my Nagito needs his body already.
