painting thin eyebrows?

Recommended Posts

tinydollproblem

I recently modded my girl and gave her a face up. It's my first attempt at painting a dollfie so I wasn't expecting perfection. But dang I can't paint thin eyebrows! My hands aren't the steadiest, but I used to paint BJD just fine. Any tricks I may not know? Most of it is needing more practice, I think, but any tips or tricks are greatly appreciated.

The head just for reference

I got some sparkle on her eyelashes, so that's what the odd white spots on her eyelashes are.

Well, my only advice would be, try watercolor pencils. I have quite shaky hands, so using acrylics is a huge pain in the a** for me XD; You can correct watercolor pencils much more easily than acrylics.

That said, you could always take a tissue/paper, put some water and try to fix (acrylic should be removeable by water).

You could also try using that paper tape (is that what it's called?). You can cut measure the forhead, cut a piece accordingly, fold it in the middle (sticky parts out), cut the shape you want the eyebrows to be, open again, carefully place the paper tape on the head and paint over where you cut holes in the paper tape.

Hope you find the solution that works for you~ ^-^

I've never been able to get water color pencils to work the way I want them to. I forgot about the masking tape trick! I"ll have to try that next time.

It could be the type of paint used too. The lines on her mouth/tongue seem fine, so if you had trouble with the blue eyebrows, was that paint different? Or maybe you didn't thin it enough?

To be able to get thin eyebrows you're going to need patience, enough paint thinner, and proper brushes.

I use the paint brushes from volks because they're tiny, easy to hold and use, and tapered for varied line weight:

Paint thinner is also a huge must. Start applying the paint with lots of thinner at first so that it's light. This way, you can work on getting exactly the shape you want without it being clumpy. Use paper towels to wipe away unwanted mistakes and better shape your brows. When you get them looking good and symmetrical, just go over top with a thicker layer of paint.

Doll head in the making by Kumi 27, on Flickr

This is 1/6 Obitsu head and the eyebrows are quite thin

I tried to paint them as thin as I could, despite having only 5/0 brush.

Then I shaped them after painting, using a small square of paper, soaked in thinner and hold by tweezers. Just wiped the excess paint.

I'm thinking the paint the same so I don't think that's it. It's probably the brushes I'm using. I have 2 cats and I used one of their dropped whiskers for the mouth lines. I couldn't get it to go straight enough for the eyebrows. I'll get a new brush and try again. Thanks everyone!

If you want a non-volks brush for painting, check out your local beauty supply store (like Sally's). I just bought these brushes and they're great at doing thin stuff like eyelashes (plus MUCH cheaper than volks).
