Appropriate thickness/thiness of acrylics for face-up?

Recommended Posts

Kendansa

I just completed my first face-up, and quite frankly I'm not pleased with myself. The paint was either so thin that it wouldn't go on at all, or so thick that it was too heavy. I couldn't find a happy medium no matter what I did. In the end, it looks like it was done by a five-year-old with a marker. Help?

I am only an amateur at faceups, but I have done a few. If I put a small dab of paint on a tray, then I add about one or two small drops of thinner. You want it to look like ink, so there's still good color but it should be more liquid than solid. Some like it thinner than others, it just requires more layers to build the color. As long as it isn't so thin it just beads up and runs then it's still good. If it is too thin you can gently wipe it off and add a tiny bit more paint to the mixture to make it slightly thicker, then try again. If it is too thick, you should be able to tell as soon as you try to load the brush. If you can see the paint clinging to the brush, it's probably too thick. That's when you get the "painted by a five year old" look. Like I said, ink-like consistency.

Thanks. The big problem was that I couldn't find an eye-dropper so I was pouring from bottle to cap to tray. I'll probably give it another shot. If it doesn't work out the second time, I'm sending her in for a pro job. XD

I like it when it's got an ink-like consistency.
