Sealents/coats

So yeah here is a little teaser how bad it can be to use TO MUCH sealent on Vinyl. I never noticed it befor but good to know now.

 

I got a head some days ago with the please to remove scratches.

I told "yeah maybe its possible but i need to see it in real first. I try my best" ...

After i got the head from PO (i open it most of the time in the car XD) my first thought was "urg it doesent looks really like scratches... hmmm i need more light to see it so drive home drive home girl "

After i went home and use as much light as i have i saw much more scratches arround both eyes and in the middle of the eyes ... and my thoughts corroborating that it is the sealent which cracks. And yes true, after i pressed other areas of the face more and more fissures came T__T ...

I am so sorry for those who have same issues, but i think that isnt possible to repair. i tried it with sanding but the more i touch the face the more fissures came T___T (At least over her cheeks and so on)

I think not only the weather is the problem because we also have much high temperatures atm and no one of my old girls cracked. I think the older the sealent (the faceup) is and the bigger the sealent the more is the "chance" that this happen.

 

At least i should say, yes i also do more layers of sealents of course. But i try my best to use not more than three, but really not much more than needable ^^ ...

A really bad experience for bluebluewave because we need to remove everything now, but i hope lots of DD artists do read this and remember it.

I think BJDs dont have this problem, its becauce of the "working/moving" Vinyl material ...

Oh yes I was thinking this would happen if too much sealant or layers were used in a DD face-up.

I haven't had the pleasure of painting one yet in my shop, but I'll be buying a practice head soon.

Yeah, normally I hover around 12-18 for resin BJD face-up commissions. Durability is what I usually aim for, but this will be a fun challenge. In my head I have the idea on what step and when, but we'll see! xD

Maybe it depends on the brand of the sealant, because I usually put about 5 layers of msc and i never had this problem.

Ah, the closer the can is while spraying, the worse the layer will turn out. You have to keep the can 35 cms far from the head.

Maybe it's due the softness of the head?

 

Applying MSC/sealant means you add another layer on top of the base layer, the head. Every time you apply sealant this layer gets thicker and thicker, just like when you repaint something (a fence, chair, you know what I mean).

If the head gets squished a bit or changes its normal form/size (due to too hot weather or when you squish while trying to remove the headcap?) the layers of sealants are stressed and may break. The layers of paint you apply adds to this too.

Just like when you repaint something flexible and then it gets moved and twisted around too much.

 

With resin dolls something like that usually happens when the doll falls onto/against a hard surface OR when the weather wasn't good enough. Too cold/hot, too humid...sealants are very picky :I

Spraying too close in front of the head is bad too.

 

This is only a theory though. There are many, many reasons why something like that can happen, and I doubt that there is a safe amount of "how many layers you should apply".

I would worry that too few layers wouldn't protect the face-up/the face, though... I start with 2 layers, so that the pastels etc are not directly on the resin/vinyl. With just one layer, I'd worry about getting the head completely covered. And I finish with 2 layers, so that it won't rub or wash off too easily... With resin bjd, I've heard of people using loooots of layers to finish a face up, which would make it really hard to rub off (or wash off ^^;).

I have a question. My girl's wig keeps sticking to her face. The Synthetic hairs stick to her face up and i have to pull them off. I'm wondering if it's the wig or the sealant. We've redone her face once already, but it still sticking. The wig itself feels fine to me.

 

Has anyone else expereinced anything like this?

I have that happen with my Kotone. She has a Volks wig, and her faceup is by me. Her bangs tend to stick to her forehead for some reason. But it never seems to hurt anything, and it doesn't leave marks in the sealant, so it doesn't really bother me. I just don't know why it happens. I have two other girls I did the faceup on and they both have Volks wigs, but neither of them have the sticking problem.

It's usually on the sides of her face. Where her bangs are, i can take pictures of it to show. The sealant is kinda shiny in the spots where this happens.
