Picking a Realistic Location/Backdrop for Costumes

Recommended Posts

Aside from my obvious novice camera use, one of the things I've struggled with in shooting my Dollfie Dreams is picking the right background for the outfits my girl is wearing. While I've lucked out that lolita frills look cute amoung flowers and maids look good on wooden floors, I've gotten myself into a bind with some new Dollheart sets I ordered.

Where the heck do I find a Hospital/Doctor's office like background for these little numbers?

I was thinking of shooting my girls on some nice marble counter tops to imitate the tile floor of a hospital. However, my counter tops are dark brown next to tan walls which doesn't always go with the white/red. I also have a big white tiled shower which I thought would be nice, but I'm not sure how much tile is too much. After all, the hospital I work at doesn't have tile up to the ceiling!

I have access to wooded parks, playgrounds, beaches with sand and large rocks, concrete driveways and a lovely garden, but none of those seem to fit with a sexy doctor and a nurse. Add to that I need to be a bit more careful with where I take these girls in these outfits. Sexy nurses are bound to draw more comments than a cute little sun dress.

I'd rather avoid doing a plain cloth drop background if possible since that doesn't seem realistic either. I'm starting to think that it may be my only option. My brother is an EMT and I'm in vet med school, so we have no shortage of scrubs, medical books and stethoscopes. I've considered using my own textbooks and med stuff against a backdrop. If I went that route I'd probably play up my girls' small sizes and have them sitting on giant anatomy textbooks or something cute like that.

Can anyone else give me some more suggestions before I resort to fabric and medical books?

I like the idea of the text books. I also think the tile might work, especially if you can hang a little curtain like they use between beds on the old wards. A brushed metal bas might look nice as well, something like the trays equipment is set on in the hospitals

I'm kind of weird, but I was thinking that it'd be cool and unique to have them in front of a scrub set with a stethoscope hanging down. xD I was picturing like one of the plain blue scrubs with a front pocket... I dunno I just pictured this whole 'MERICA nurse picture... with the red, white, and blue. xD

I also agree with Eviee about a brushed metal background. That'd be really neat and would go with red and white very well. I also think your bathroom tiles would be nice too. If you feel like it's too many tiles, you can hang some sort of cloth (near the top) and it would just look like a colored wall, possibly?

Wow! Thank you guys for the suggestions! I'd love to have even more if anyone things of them.

The curtain hanging and scubs ideas are both really cute. I'm going to go play with those today and see what I can find.

I'm really starting to like the idea of the brushed metal. Aside from breaking out the tinfoil (which would wrinkle and not look brushed metal at all) does anybody have a good idea of where I could find such an item? At the moment I'm thinking cookie sheets, but I don't know that they'd be big enough.
