Do you keep a tally of what you have spent on this hobby?

No. NO. NOOOO! If I saw how much I've spent I'd probably have a heart attack. Better not to think about it.

I'm just starting out in this hobby but I'm definitely planning to keep track of my spendings!

Failed to do that with my other hobby, but doing so would certainly encourage me to restrain myself more.

I used to, but when they went over 4 million yen I stopped. For sanity.

it's best not to keep track of what you spend on a hobby.. As long as you can afford it, it's best to not look at the final tallies.

If I kept track of how much I spent on my dolls (whether it was to get them or get stuff for them) I'd likely loose my marbles at what I COULD have got with that money. (Like a down payment on a 2015 model car)

No, but I SHOULD start keeping an expense report and budget report so I know where my money disappears to! I would not like to know what I've spent on dolls LOL.

Yes, I have XD. Tallying up the money I've spent on the BJD hobby and this one combined may lead to heart attacks in some ...

I can take a guess, and it's not a small number. Doesn't worry me, I'd have no doubt found something else to spend the money on.

I know how much i spent on the dolls but I don't even wanna think about all the little things like clothes and shoes and eyes and faceups and things like that. Its always teh little things that add up. XP

Well, I'm two months into it. I have one DD. Tally so far is a bit over $3k. "OUCH"

Absolutely not. I have a mental tally of what I spend, base price, for each doll (right now only bjds), but I never tally the totals. I'd probably collapse from the shock of spending that much money!

I do, for insurance because heck yes I am insuring these puppies. I have an app that I use to itemise all my doll's values and the value of the accessories I've purchased for them. It can be mildly painful to look at (I like spending the money at the time…) but it would be even more painful to lose the collection with no way of building it back up again.

I don't keep track but I wouldn't mind knowing because I think it would be funny to see... but I don't think my husband would find it as hilarious. I'm worried I spend far more on hobbies than he does!

zaftiq makes a good point, I wish I knew for insurance reasons. When I got insurance I just had to make a guess. :/

ABSOLUTELY. Lily has been here two months and I still don't have her insured. Thanks for reminding me that I need to move this task from a back burner to the front of the stove.

PS. If I might ask, what's the app?

Not in my head. I mean, I know roughly how much I've spent of course. I do keep all my invoices though, both hard copies and scanned or electronically from paypal if bought online. I won't actually tally it all up unless I need to file an insurance claim, I'd probably go mad if I did

My state has a use Tax so I have to keep a tally along with purchase dates.

I look the total at it as proof of my insanity...

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

You most certainly may ask! It's called Sortly for iPhone (I don't know if there's an android version) and it's a little spartan but simple to use. I put all the cost of the doll in the 'notes' of an entry (wig, any customising costs, the doll value itself) and then tall it up as the 'value' of the entry. You can add photos as well, and the main page will display all your dolls, their values, and the total value. It is of course best practice to also keep receipts! I hope that's helpful.

When I first got into dolls I bought a BJD and a whole bunch of stuff for him. Back then I did keep an eye on how much money I sank into him. When the dolls started piling up I got lazy and maybe protective of my sanity and stopped counting!

Now that I'm just opening this hobby up I think it would be cool to keep an eye on how much I spend, just to know where the money went. Especially now that I'm also a start of an adult and am trying to be smarted with my funds.

No, but I can roughly guess that in the last 3 years we have spent $6,500+ that I can guess from the top of my head, but it's most likely more.

Yuriko, Tama, wigs, clothes, misc. body parts along with Rainie's head- approx $1,000

Daisy- $900

Miss Lottie & Sohi- approx $1,500

Sheryl, Ranka & 1 outfit- (saving) $1,600

2 Obitsu bodies- $600

Shoes- $145

Wigs & wig supplies- $125-ish

Lucas- $365

Spoonflower fabric swatches & yardage- $175

This doesn't even include Naiomi, Dakota, Bree, Ellie, Miku, as well as heads for Ringo, Ralph, Kiyoteru, Lorelai, & the pre-rooted head, eyes, Anouc faceups & shipping, various bust pieces from Parabox, misc. Volks faceup supplies, sewing supplies, specialty thread & equipment, hot glue & other craft supplies for their stuff, additional camera supplies & lighting, plushies & other toys/props, shopping trips when the DD raided Dollar Tree & the craft store... Without DD, these are things we would not have bought otherwise (that I know of.)

To me (and I'm sure Raven would mostly agree) this isn't a big deal. Are we rolling in cash? Heck no! We have to be careful with everything we have. I don't worry about the total because I do this because it's something I love, and there are a lot of things we don't have or do. We don't have a car, pay insurance or gas for one, we don't go to the movies our out to eat (occasionally we order pizza), we no longer buy video games, much of the DD things and almost all their clothes we have are things I've made, we have bought a few things on layaway but never buy anything with credit. Oh, and we don't have kids (but we have 2 cats.) Sure we both love anime and would be thrilled to be able to buy the manga we really want, but compared to the DD it just doesn't seem worth it.

And for me it still seems cheap compared to the alternative for me to keep my sanity & chronic depression at bay. I buy DD so I don't have to spend my life doped up on medication. Their worth far exceeds their baseline cost. They complete me in a way that I'd never be able to put a price tag on, nor have I found elsewhere in my life.

How many people total up what human kids cost them? I'm sure that would be a much more frighting number.

Noooo--- I try not to think about what I have spent on dolls. ^^; I hate spending money as it is, and if I think about numbers I'm more likely to just not buy anything. And that's not very fun.
