Sanding down Dollfie Dream busts [*NSFW*]

Recommended Posts

NSFW warning: This post contains photos of nude Dollfie Dream parts. This post is also photo-heavy.

Cross-posted on my blog: http://keripo.com/2013/08/sanding-down-dollfie-dream-busts/

Intro

A while back when I was photographing V0 of my custom Arcueid Brunestud Dollfie Dream, I quickly noted something bothering me when I was reviewing the photos. Something that stood out. Literally. That something was the pointy nipples of the DD L bust. Like in this photo:

Are you cold or are you just happy to see me?

For a modest character with a modest outfit like Arcueid, the overly-pointy and obvious nipples looked completely out of place. I remember reading a tutorial written a while back by Archangeli about sanding down the nipples, so I decided to try it on my newly arrived L shapely bust.

Took me about 2hrs cause I didn't have a rotary tool and had to sand it all down by hand. Also didn't wear a mask or anything so I probably lost a few years of my life, but it was definitely worth the effort. The sandpaper that I bought from Amazon was a variety set ranging from 400 to 1500 grit (Archangeli used 2000 grit) but I actually found myself only using 400 grit. I probably could have gotten better results with the 1500 grit sandpaper, but my hands were pretty tired by the end and it looked "good enough".

So here's some photos of the process. The final results are at the bottom. Definitely worth the effort in my opinion. For full-sized photos, see the complete Flickr set. Enjoy!

Sandpaper

Here's the L shapely bust that'll be operated on today. Note the obvious pointly nipples.

Cheap sandpaper bought from Amazon

Six sheets of sandpaper of different grit, alon with some blue strap that I had no idea how to use

Sandpaper roughness ranged from 400 grit (rough) to 1500 grit (fine)

Sanding down dem pointies

Me trying out various different ways of sanding down the nipples. In the end, I found it easiest to hold the bust with my hand and scrub it across the sandpaper held down on the table.

Since I was sanding it down by hand, it took quite a bit of effort

My table was quickly covered by bits of vinyl (don't inhale this!)

Half way there

Here's the result of one hour of sanding

Results

Aoi volunteered to be the model, borrowing Arcueid's turtle-neck sweater. No more pointy nipples! \o/

Your doll looks much better with the "new" bust. I've been thinking of doing the same thing to my shapely bust, but I've never sanded anything in my life. I'll be consulting a lot of guides in the future for the task.

She certainly looks a lot cleaner without her nipples sticking up against her shirt! I think I'll give this a go with Hibana's M bust—even though her nipples aren't as bad as the L bust or Dynamite busts, they still show through her white uniform shirt if I hold her a certain way, so now that I've seen it done, I know it won't make her boobs look like they have flat tips! >

Specializing in the art of being different, which is a polite way of saying "weird."

I do think I'm too young for this hobby…

I hate to say this guys, but OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How could you do this to your poor girl???? Just think how that felt to her while you were doing it!! (Very hard for me to type this with my hands over my boobs in fear that I might be next on the list!!) Sorry! I just couldn't resist teasing you a bit because I was thinking about the thread related to things that dollfie owners say and I could just imagine the reaction if you were in public somewhere and said something like "Well, I didn't like Hibana's nipples showing so I sanded them off."

Thank you for posting this! I've been considering doing this to my Nova's chest since I got her since I like light weight clothing for her and her nipples are always poking out. Plus it's distorting the clothing! I'm not into the nipple look so I would really like to do this myself.

A nail filer would have made it easier to sand, but ideally a rotary tool is a better tool for the job. But not everyone has one of those.

The sweater looks much nicer without those nipples of doom!!

You could always paint flat nipples on later if you wanted to ^^

I did this to a few of my busts in February and blogged about it too.

http://archangeli.net/2013/02/20/a-touch-of-modesty/

I used a dremel which was a lot less manual labour.

So far I've sanded a DDdy, a shapely L and a M bust and the clothes look so much nicer.

Haha, yup, it was your blog post that inspired me, though when I read it back then, I only remember seeing pics of a sanded down DDdy and assumed it'd be the same with a L shapely ^_^

Bumping this thread ^-^

Is a multi pack of the sandpaper worth buying, or can you buy one type/number and go from there?

And has anyone ever had an issue with air pockets in the vinyl?

I'm wanting to try sanding a dds L bust soon ^-^ thanks in advance

I have more dollfies than my age in years *×*

That was my first time sanding vinyl, so I went the safe (and cheap) route of buying a combo pack. From what I found, you want to use very fine grit (1500Cw for me) to get a smooth finish, but I had to use the 400Cw for a very, very long time just to get it close. In other words, something super rough (e.g. 200Cw) for the initial nipple sanding down, something medium (e.g. 800Cw) to even out the shape, then something super fine (e.g. 2000Cw) to polish it.

Yes, get the multi-pack. You'll want to use the lower numbered (coarser) papers to start with to take off more material faster, then work up to the higher number (finer) papers to give the vinyl a smooth finished surface. The higher grit (1000+) papers are frequently wet-dry papers so you can use them wet. Wetting the paper and the sanding surface helps keep the dust from becoming airborne, reduces friction heating, and lubricates the work area helping to flush away material.

You can also reduce your sanding time by starting with a little careful x-acto work, cutting some of the material off.

Definitely not something you've shared with us in MADh Vinyl......

I don't expect to have a doll with a bust that would need sanding down, but I think I'd try to leave a bit of the areola in the hopes it would still retain some of it's "natural" look.
