If you can't buy it, make it!

Hi Everyone. I have had another custom doll in the works. This one has been worked on and off for almost a year now!

 

The head I started off with was supposed to be for my previous custom viewtopic.php?f=13&t=6381 but because I messed up on the eyes (as you will see later) I brought a new head for the Tsundere project and this one was left behind. This head did just become a guinea pig of sorts. I would do things to it, then wipe it, do something wipe it.

 

There was a specific type of custom I wanted, an open mouthed girl full of character. I have bidded on many Yahoo Japan customs from several different artists and have never won the bidding Eventually I decided to do the ultimate test on my guinea pig, it would either make her, or break her.

 

So here is where the story began:

 

I inherited this head. Technically the brush work was very good but not my personal taste. She also had poorly modded elf ears.

 

 

First steps were to wipe the existing face, remove the ear mods and clean the whole thing up in general. Tah dah!

 

 

Ok, now she was all clean but honestly she still looked ghastly to me. Her mouth was creepy, I hate the ddh01 eyelids and her nose was too pointy. Time to get cutting and sanding! At this point this was still the first modding I had done and when cutting into the eye to reshape it I slipped and cut a huge chunk out!

 

I ended up filling in the cuts with epoxy putty but it now ruined the eye shape I wanted for my Tsundere custom so I brought a new head for that project and started again. This head went back into a box for a while.

 

 

After the Tsundere project was completed, at some point I started work on this head again. I changed the shape of the eyes again and ended up with this.

 

 

After losing more auctions than I care to remember, I decided I'd have a stab at this more advanced modding and make my own open mouthed girl myself. Crazy right? I drilled a hole in the mouth to start working with.

 

 

After drilling the hole, I used my shaped needle files to make a mouth shape I was happy with. I ended up with this.

 

 

Obviously you don't want to see to the inside of the head, so next I filled the mouth hole in with putty and shaped it.

 

 

The next day when it was cured, I decided to add a fang, because apparantly I'm a glutton for punishment. The fang is only 2.5 mm at it's largest point!!! It's freaking tiny and was so hard!

 

 

Once I was happy with my mods I sealed the head and got to painting. I was really limited on how I could paint her eyelashes as it had to cover up the putty in the eyes, this was an interesting challenge to get around XD At first she looked like this, but I wasn't satisfied so I wiped it all and started again.

 

 

I brought some proper pain thinners, some proper mixing pallets and new brush. OMG the new brush was like magic (Windsor and Newton 7 series )and the thinner made the paint so much nicer to work with. My second face for her looked like this and I loved it!

 

 

She's supposed to be on a P40 body, but I don't have it yet so I plonked her on Mai's obitsu 50 body for a quick 'finished' photo.

 

 

 

I'm really please how she came out considering it was my first 'major' mod of this type. Yes she may not be totechi or momo man quality but they've got years of practice over me! I think for my 1st mod of this type and my 3rd face up overall, I think I've got a lot to be proud of and I would love to do a mod like this again ^^

 

I do need to buy better quality paints for my pinks though, even with the thinner, the pink paints I have were pretty bad quality. Must buy new, better paints for next mod.

 

Anyway I hope you like my new girl as much as I do. She doesn't have a name yet, so any idea appreciated. So far I'm thinking Rikko, but I'm not 100% settled on that XD

Wow, that's really cool! The open mouth mod you did looks really amazing. It's really incredible how the mistake of cutting too much on the eyes turned out to be a really awesome looking girl. She looks super adorable and I really liked reading about how she got to that point.

That's a really good job. It's admirable that you've taken things into your own hands, as it were. Nice touch on the fang, too. There should be a few more DD with fangs

This is the exact mouth shape (almost) I want my MDD to have! Just a little curvier upper lips and it'll be perfect! of course this is yours so let me stop daydreaming about mine.
