Valkyria Posted September 17, 2013 Hi! A lot of characters in anime have the antenna (cowlick), like Sakura Kinomoto, Saber, Moka Akashiya, etc. I've seen the Volks Saber wig, and a few others, that had the antenna, and I was wondering how to style it like that without making the wig look greasy. Was the Saber wig weft specially for that, or is it possible to get that effect myself? And also, just in general how do I style the cowlick? Pictures, comments, anything would be appreciated. Cauldroness Posted September 17, 2013 You can use water wax -- it won't make the wig look greasy: http://www.volksusa.com/matlst0005.html Doll Photos & Doll Jewelry Sales: Follow me on Instagram!
Valkyria Posted September 17, 2013 Thank you! That's a big help. So the hair will stand up in place when I apply that?
faustbane Posted September 18, 2013 Wig wax probably won't be strong enough for your needs. You can also use a tiny bit of white school glue at the base and ends of the hair you want to stand up. I've seen Japanese DD owners also use a tiny cut off piece of clear drinking straw at the base of the hair strand to give it stability.
Valkyria Posted September 18, 2013 Thank you both so much! I'll definitely have to try that, and if it turns out well, I'll show you.
jadepixel Posted September 18, 2013 Ooh, I'll have to try that plastic straw tip! I've used wig wax to style hair like Sabers's wig, but it's not as strong. The up side is that it's very easy to style back to normal again after a photo shoot. For a more permanent style the white glue would be better. jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

galatia9 Posted September 23, 2013 Another way to make a reversible hair antenna could be to use a bit of matching color thread and wrap it around the base of the bit of hair, anchoring the thread in the wig cap with accessible knots (and then of course, adding the styling product.) jadepixel, your girl is so darn cute! Valkyria Posted September 23, 2013 Thanks! The method I used for Valkyria was simple. I mixed a dime-sized amount of tacky-glue with 1/4 cup of water, and then brushed it through the strand of hair with a toothbrush, then wrapped the hair section in aluminum foil and then used my blow dryer on high-heat, low-speed setting for a couple minutes, let it sit and then removed it. It doesn't feel plastic-y at all, and it has a nice sheen and bounce to it when I move her.
mangaemi Posted September 24, 2013 They do make clear elmers glue now that might work just as well vs using white school glue. I've used Leekes wig wax on Akira's little antenna, and it did help keep it together but it's not enough to give it that gravity defying lift... Aronzo96 Posted September 24, 2013 OMG. This is actually exactly what I was looking for. I've been working on my incoming girl's wig and just thought it was missing something. It was a long, straight pink wig. I put some waves into it and then trimmed some layers, then tapered the length in the back, but it still wasn't just right. But now that I put a little antenna in her hair, it's really dang cute. Her bangs will still likely need to be trimmed, but for now this is perfect.
Anna-neko Posted September 24, 2013 My girl's ahoge isn't even held with glue... its normal hairspray. like human stuff hairspray Just wet my finger in it, then rubbed it on the strand of hair wanted & curled it around a big hairclip Once dry it stays up perfect. If need be - just rinse out with water, thus restoring original wig state & restyle as desired
Aronzo96 Posted September 24, 2013 I wish I could take a picture of the one I just made, but I don't think anyone would appreciate a DS camera-grainy picture of a pink wig resting on a traffic cone (to keep the shape of the wig until the doll arrives and because I had it there when I was trimming earlier) Maybe tomorrow when I have a better look around my room to find that camera and when my girl should be home, I can get something decent together for you guys.
