Sanding DD Vinyl

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to slightly mod a DDH-04 head to use for another OC gal. Specifically I want to sand down some of the 'acron' cheeks. What types of sandpaper or other tools do you use to get the vinyl to not show any modification?

Sandpaper 400, 600 and then 1000 grit should smooth it out fine.

I get impatient with mods, so if I need to take off a lot, I use an x-acto knife to slice away the vinyl. It's risky though, I wouldn't recommend it if you're not sure or if you don't have a steady hand. If you do use one, make sure the blade is fresh and sharp

You can find fine sandpaper and x-acto knives at art/hobby stores.

I'd suggest going up to 1500 or 2000. ALSO you want to get it somewhere else than Volks. You can get a 5 pack of 9"x11" wet/dry sandpaper (at least below 3k grit) for $5-$9. Just tear off what you need from it, it really lasts a lot longer than what you can get from the Volks selection.

In terms of the xacto knife, I've found it's really difficult to do large reductions without cutting too much, even if you do a lot of small cuts. But my hand may be shaking while I'm doing it, who knows.

I found an x-acto knife shaped more like a veggie peeler that works well for scraping down the vinyl. You'll have to sand after using it of course, but it will speed up removing cheeks quite a bit. Look for an x-acto woodcarving router and blades at the hobby shop.

I talk about my modding process for 01 head in this thread:
