Two New Custom Painted Heads

Recommended Posts

littlebearries

I just thought I'd share these guys, mostly because one of them is a modding project of a friend of mine, and I think it turned out super cute. She modded an HDD-04 head to look slightly more like Yoko by sanding down its cheeks and reshaping its nose and lips... the change isn't drastic, but I think it adds to the cuteness!! (I painted the faceup on her)

The second is an HDD-02 I painted:

Nice faceups.

I just re-did Kaori (DDH-02), however tried to use paintbrush and failed. Either the paint is too thick or too thin (using Tamiya acrylic paints). The weather here is making it too difficult to get the right consistency. I went back to masking and airbrushing.

What size brushes are you using to do your faceups?

They are so beautiful! I particularly love the 02 head but I am very 02-biased!

You did wonderfully on both heads but the 04 girl is just AWESOME! Completely adorable in every way. Congrats on some really fine work!

Nice work as always. I prefer the first one out of these two. WIth no equivalent angle of the default head to compare to I admit to only seeing the changes in the nose. Alas.

The 04 is... Too cute... She is unique **

Yeah, I really like the way she turned out XD

Nice faceups.

I don't own an airbrush

For my faceups, I use the brushes that Volks sells off their site... pretty much the range of them. I love those brushes. Do you use a paint retarder? It works way better than just water.

Thank you! The HDD-02 head has really grown on me... I want to paint more of them!!

My friend and I thank you XD

Thanks! I'm glad you guys liked em!

Oh wow, that is really the best 04 head I've seen - love the mod and the faceup! Great expression

Thanks! And my friend thanks you too XD Yeah... this makes me want my own HDD-04... that's bad... very bad...

I... don't have a default HDD-04 :x Otherwise I would have done comparison shots... but since this girl is going to belong to my friend, I'm sure I'll eventually get another unmodded HDD-04 to take pictures with.

Fantastic work littlebearries! They are both amazing but I really love the 04 head. The slight changes to the face really make it unique and you did a fantastic job on the faceup!

Mind if I ask about the painting? Do you use a mask for the lashes? They are really "sharp" which is what I find the problem in so many other faceups I've seen people do. It's hard to get a nice crisp point.

I've thought of trying a faceup before and toyed with the idea of making a paper mask (template) for the lashes, or just parts of the lashes. Do one eye, then flip it over to get matching lashes on the 2nd eye. Just curious.

I actually don't use a mask, I just eyeball it XD A lot of getting a sharp point really has to do with the amount of pressure you apply to the brush as you're making the stroke, along with which direction you're going... I think the problem a lot of people have, when you see the unsharp points, is that they're just not willing to commit to the full stroke. The lines go on much smoother, and the points are much cleaner, if you make one continuous stroke, as opposed to trying to do it in small increments... lol... is this making any sense?!

Oh yea, it makes perfect sense. The trick is doing a confident full stroke and getting it to be in the right spot and stop at the right time. You have it down! I need way more practice though. haha
