Another question about DD hands & weapons

Recommended Posts

pharaviel

I've seen some topics about hands, large vs normal, but they are 4-5 months old and I didn't want to necroing them up again.

So...

I got a DDS body from Kitsune here, and I'll get standard (normal size, type 1) hands matching the body.

And I'm thinking to buy the sword holding and the gripping hands pairs for having her hold a weapon.

Would the standard, small ones be fine for holding a rifle?

I was thinking about the big ones. They seems to me more detailed and more proportionate to the head size (from the photo they seem me long from the chin to the middle of the front, which I believe it's a normal size) but maybe big comparing them to the standard. Maybe a little too big for the DDS body?

Thoughts? Tips? Example photos?

I don't have any holding hands, but I do have the machine gun Volks sells for their DDs, and in the pictures it looks like they used the small sword holding right hand to hold it.

http://www.volksusa.com/acddac001.html

I think I would get a combination of hands, depending on the rifle I had. I wouldn't mind having the larger hands if they held the weapon well.

The DDS is only a little smaller than the regular DD bodies, so I wouldn't worry too much on that point. I think regular and large hands would work on both.

What rifle do you have? Let me know if you want any pics of a DD with the Volks machine gun (I believe it is a replica of a 9mm).

Volks made the machine gun long before the larger hands were even available, so the small hands were the only option when they took photos. Most weapons made by Volks will predate the release of the large hands, and will fit in the smaller hands.

(I think the Volks Machine Gun is supposed to be a Heckler & Koch MP5?)

I've also used the small gripping hands for non-Volks weapons, for example:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y172/Cauldroness/Robot%20Photostory/Robot16a_zpsf2720433.jpg

(This is a replica Glock G17 9mm Pistol.)

I have three DDS girls and, personally, I hate how the large hands look on them. I think they're just too big. I don't like the large hands on DDIIIs... I only like them on DDdy girls. For DDS and DDIII, every time I look at them, I think "What giant man-hands!"

This is my DDS girl with the small gripping right hand:

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y172/Cauldroness/Robot%20Photostory/Robot10a_zpsdf645c67.jpg

Personally, I find the scale "just right," but it really is all personal preference.

The other thing to remember is that, if you're mixing hands, you want both her right and left hand to match size-wise. A large gripping right hand + a small normal left hand is going to look really weird.

Thank you, Cauldroness!! I was trying to identify it.

Your DDS girl's hands do look just right holding that pistol. I haven't seen the large hands in person, but I think I would use them if the particular weapon was too large to be held with the small hands.

As Cauldroness said, the Volks machine gun is supposed to be a replica of one of the many H&K MP models. I believe this prop was designed specifically to fit the DD hands, so maybe other rifles will be too large.

ddac-machine-gun-2.jpgMP3K_ImgID1.jpg

I could just sand/file the handle though, I don't think it could be seen.

By the way I wanted to get something exotic like a Steyr AUG

AUG_A1_407mm_03.jpg

or a Dragunov

800px-SVD_Dragunov.jpg

or even a FN P90 that could fit in a violin case

800px-FNPS9002.jpg

In the end I found and bought these two, they should get here next week.

The m4 is a little too mainstream for my tastes, but easy to source.

81IhbewYl5L._SL1500_.jpg

81JPOGH3QXL._SL1500_.jpg

And yes, I would really like to see the pics! Can the DD hold the rifle with just one hand? Or it needs to be balanced on the second hand?

Volks made the machine gun long before the larger hands were even available, so the small hands were the only option when they took photos. Most weapons made by Volks will predate the release of the large hands, and will fit in the smaller hands.

I understand your doubt with the large hands.

Maybe I'll wait to get both the DDS and the rifles to see if the size is right with the standard hands, and then decide what to order.

By the way, thanks for the pic.

Do you recall the brand-model of the replica? I was searching for a glock replica before, and stumbled upon a Dragon branded glock replica, but it was unavailable.

You're welcome!

Just for clarity, the girl holding the pistol is a DDII (an 07 head kidnapping Rin's body), not a DDS. The girl holding a robot is a DDS. Both girls use the smaller hands.

I also managed to find a photo of a DDdy girl with the smaller hands, too:

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q284/CauldyInFrance/McGee/NewToy03.jpg

Close-up of the hand (the finger even rests on the trigger!) and the gun:

http://i139.photobucket.com/albums/q284/CauldyInFrance/McGee/NewToy04.jpg

@pharaviel: I own the Volks machine gun and, yes, a DD can easily hold it with one hand. I don't have any other rifles, but I suspect a DD would be able to hold them one-handed if they weren't too heavy. Weight is a bigger issue than size.

My Glock is from the Dragon firearm series. I really hope they do another run of them. They're really nicely made and come with teensy bullets. They haven't been released since 2009, but you can still find a few floating around on eBay, pretty close to the original price.

I've got some pics of my girls holding some weapons!

Here's Manami on the left and Miyuki on the right:

All of my girls use the old small hands for gripping hands. As you can see above, Miyuki can hold the Volks machine gun easily with one hand. Here's a shot of her holding it in her other hand:

Here's Manami with her Dragon series pistol. I find the fit is perfect for the DD girls. But the hand she has it in now isn't the one where she'd have the pistol for shooting. Her left hand is more suited to have the trigger finger lining up properly.

Other random things fit their hands well too like this laser pistol that's really a keychain:

And how can you show DD's with guns and not show Yoko and Boomer?

That's all of the guns I have for my girls... they mostly prefer swords and melee styled weapons.

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

There's always Megatron:

The one on the left is an accessory from the MP-01/20th Anniversary Optimus Prime. It's kind of small, but works OK. The one on the right is commonly called WST Megatron, and is fully transformable, as well. eBay might have a few floating around, although I'm not sure how much they'd be.

I've also picked up this Phaser from the original Star Trek!

I found it at Barnes and Noble, with the other little tiny boxed knick knacks. That same display with the mini martini glasses, not that I've ever seen those. It has a light up effect, but no sound. It also comes with a small book that's more or less DD size, too, for something like $12.

LOL, I recognized the weapons you showed you wanted. Henrietta's FN P90 is pretty distinctive.

I like your character ideas! I want to do a Gunslinger Girl fratello myself, but only for BJD cosplay.

Galvatim, I saw that phaster at B&N! So cool. It's a great size.

And, apparently, so difficult to find a 1/3 scaled replica...

Sorry to dig the old thread, but how did it go? I want a FN P90 too, since i got the violin+case today! Dragunov is a given wish list, but i have only seen 1/6 scale for sale. I do got access to free 3D printing though, maybe one day when i can make some models when i'm not lazy

Just popping in for a bit, anyways, last I checked, the 1/3 scale weapons are rather limited. There are several sword kits out of Japan, but I haven't seen much in the way of guns to the same degree as 1/6 scale. There were some floating around eBay for a while, but I wasn't really looking at prices at the time. I wish you luck in your search though!
