Anime/game made you loose interest in Holy DD Grail/unicorn?

So I guess most of us have or have had that "holy DD grail"/unicorn that we're trying to get. Have you ever lost the desire to get that "holy grail" after seeing her anime and/or game original?

 

Initially I didn't like Rise Kujikawa (guess it was her eyes/wig/clothes) but over time, as I saw how good she could look with/in other eyes/wigs/clothes, she became my "holy grail".

 

So, shortly before christmas I made the mistake of watching the P4 anime . I'll refrain from posting a wall of text rant about the anime but let's just say i lost (nearly) all interest in Rise due to her personality in the anime (I'm sure my wallet is happy though).

So far I haven't really been interested in a DD for the original character (except Miku, but that's not a problem). So this hasn't happened to me for DDs!

 

With the Saber DDs being so popular, I'm curious about her character... but part of me feels I wouldn't like the games/anime/etc that she's from so I haven't gotten into it.

 

How was the P4 anime? I've been meaning to watch it, but I didn't want it to ruin the game for me (which I haven't finished yet)

I think this would have to be with Saber (blue) after I seen the anime. I wanted to get her thanks to a dream but that didn't happen, especially after seeing loads of people getting numerous versions of her. I just dropped out and got Vara in a totally different mindset. I would like to get Lily but I think that's impossible, even if she was on sale due to funds and all.

 

I'm actually itching to get Yukikaze from Dog Days after watching the anime. She's just too awesome of a foxy character that I'd like to see some form of her, especially with me thinking GSC won't make anything of her. I'm planning on making her.

 

Then there is Ahri...I know of her just well enough that she is a Korean fox from League of Legends. I know she has a rough playful nature, wanting to eat liver. She is Korea's equivalent of a Japanese and Chinese Kitsune. I'm sure that if I continue looking into Ahri's concepts that I just might want to back out....eventually. I want to know more so I can summon her properly. I'm interested and afraid at the same time a wedge might be placed in between us making me look silly about wanting to summon Ahri.

 

I also want to try poking at Renge and Kohiru, but only when I'm truly ready and when Danny's SmartDoll is settled in the market. Shinkis can be anything so I don't have to worry about any game or anime ruining their personalities. Shinkis have their base personality that changes with each experience and battle, or that's how the concept goes.

 

Now what would make me lose interest in my Holy DD/Unicorns would be a long belated trip to Japan. I would happily jump on a trip to jump to Japan before summoning them.

You said you don't want to ruin the game so I wont give any story details. I'll just say that it was one of the most boring animes I've ever watched. I typically rate 75% of the animes I watch as 2 or 3 on a 1 to 5 scale; P4 get a 1 rating from me. Haven't played the game so I can't comment on the similarites. In my opinion the anime was just a repetitive jumping in-and-out of the "TV-worlds" with no captive story and no likable characters.

I tend to change the appearance and personality of my girls, so the only thing that matters to me is if I like how they look. Sometimes I watch the source material, and if I liked it then it may have some impact on what I do with her later. But it really doesn't matter.

 

When I do really like the source character, like Saber, I still change them, but I consider it a bonus. That's when I'm more interested in owning the fullset, so I can still use it if I take them to a convention. Then they can cosplay as themselves.

 

My grail doll is Yuki Morikawa, and I tried watching the White Album anime, but I got bored. I realize their popularity stems more from the visual novel than the anime, but as I have no access to it I can't use it for reference. But I still love her face, and so it doesn't matter to me that I find her anime boring.

Luckily, I don't think this will ever happen to me. The only deciding factor in my DD purchases is whether or not I like the head mold -- I don't pay attention to the franchise they come from.

 

I've got Rin and Saber and have never seen any of the Fate series; I've got Marisa and Reimu and know nothing about Touhou other than that cute "Bad Apple" VMA; I'll soon have Erica and Sakura and haven't seen more than a few clips of the Sakura Taisen anime; and I have two Rises and haven't the slightest clue about anything Persona-related.

 

And even though I really loved Sword Art Online, I disliked how Asuna's head mold turned out, so I'll never purchase her.

I agree with those that said they're in it for how the doll looks. If I also happen to like the character, that does tend to put her a little bit higher up the ladder for me, for example, I'm still seriously lusting after Asuna, she's one of my favourite protagonists. It's also interesting to me, that I think I would still get the girl if I didn't totally love her sculpting if I loved the character enough.

 

If they ever came out with a Sonozaki Shion doll I would probably get her even if I didn't like her sculpt much. (I seriously think this is a thing that should happen... imagine if they did Mion and Shion? Differences in sculpt to tell the twins apart? Yass.)

I'm mostly into DD for the sculpts rather than the character, but I try to make an informed decision before getting one. If I'm offended by the source material, I can't really enjoy the doll as much, I'm just stubborn that way! So that's why I have to pass on Noumi and Asuna. The second season of SAO was such a huge letdown and really damaged Asuna's appeal for me, to the point I couldn't enjoy the DD of her.

If the DD actually has a story of its own, I will need to know it before buying. It will be hard to pretend the story doesnt exist. I might be able to put it off for a while but curiosity will kill me in the end.

 

From personal experience, I had bought PVC figures that simply looked nice and had no idea about their story. In the end, it lost its appeal fast since I find it hard to connect to it.

 

Give me any customised or volks' own characters and I have no problems at all since their personalities will probably be adjusted the most suited to my tastes and you can create your story.

I fell in love with Yuki Morikawa because of her adorable head whom I would turn custom.

The anime is making me mad! I looooove Yuki in it! That poor girl. ;^; (I'm only on episode 8 though, so I don't know how I will feel by the end of the show.)

I actually liked P4 but never really liked Rise in it, even though I have a Rise. I loved Yu Narukami though and if they ever made a DD of him, then Volks is taking my money. Rin used to be a grail but it wasn't the anime that made me lose interest, just didn't feel like getting her after a while. I generally go for a sculpt because I like how it looks and seeing the anime doesn't have any bearing on it, usually.

Nope, watched a fansub. Well, "hated" is probably a bit too strong word, more like I foud it boring and had to force my way through it. It's not unusual for me to watch six or more episodes in one sitting if I really like a sieries but with P4 I couldn't stand watching more than one or two episodes at a time. I guess it all went down hill after the first episode or so when I realized what Rise's anime character was like.

Sounds pretty much like me Besides, with my total lack of imagination I kind of have to base their personalities on the official back story. I guess in my case Saber's the only one that's a 50/50 between back story and sculpt, the rest of the group is mostly a result of me liking their sculpts. I mean, the Akihabara Girls doesn't even have a back story except the one put together by Volks.

If my memory serves my right then the game was actually an eroge but there's certainly no trace of that in the anime.

 

I guess "strong willed, stern and independent yet able to show a soft side" pretty much describes Saber. I usually have a problem focusing on the more intricate parts of a story so other things such as visuals, character personalities and bgm is usually of bigger importance to me.

Oh? Have to try and find the VN then. Last time I checked (a couple of years ago) there was no offical english translation, only a fan based attempt at a translation that wasn't complete.

You can think of the VN as a slide-show anime with a couple sex scenes (typical for anything rated R/18+), as opposed to actual eroge which are all about the sex scenes

Fate/stay night has been fully translated for some time, but Fate/hollow ataraxia, a fan-disc sequel (which can be REALLY funny) is only partially translated. It sounds like the fan-translation group behind F/ha is nearing completion, so I wouldn't bother trying it out until they do another release.

I feel a little different about that: while I find some limited edition cute or sexy, I would never buy one and keep it as it is without knowing the anime/manga/Story behind.

 

I also don't feel buying stuff to get my dd to be an anime/Manga character.

If I would start to do that, I would be broke soon (one nice project could be making the 6 katawa shoujo girls).

No accounting for taste. I liked Rise very much in P4 and she appears to be the most popular girl so I'm not alone in this. The anime is definitely for fans of the game. It has some pacing issues, in particular its painfully too-faithful-to-the-game slow start. I thought the anime was merely competent overall; it wouldn't make a "best of" or "worst of" list anyway.

 

I'm in the case that I like Rise the character, like Rise the sculpt, but don't really think the two of these matched up all that well. Instead, I got her DD primarily because she had an actual nose.

Yup, I always said I was going to do my own customs for Mii and Shii, but an official release may sway me pretty easily

I love the sculpts of Saber, Rise and Asuna and I'm not really a fan of the characters, but I knew about it from the start.

I'd feel a little weird about owning them and I'd rather leave them for someone who would actually like them for what they are. Weird since I loved Saber while reading the VN, but after I "recovered" after the game I realized she was kinda meh.

I don't really get why Volks never released any Higurashi characters considering how popular it was. Especially that they released Beatrice and Maria.

I know to avoid the source material for a few of my girls, since I'm not fond of the harem genre. I can't say I'm a big fan of Saber-the-character but I am in love with Saber-the-doll. It drives my friend who is a Saber fan nuts that all I care about is the head and not the outfit and such.

I agree with jadepixel that I enjoyed how SAO started, but the following season was a real let down that I couldn't get into. I felt SAO had a lot of potential that wasn't realized. I've since lost interest in the character of Asuna, but I still like the DD, her look and outfit a lot. She is on my wishlist.

 

I would love to see a DD of Amagi Yukiko from Persona 4.

 

So, I guess that for now I would say no, I don't think I would lose interest in a DD becasue I didn't like the character, anime or VN it was from.

Just curious... when jadepixel mentioned the second season of SAO, she was referring to the second cour, the ALO episodes. Were you referring to that? Since she posted that (last January!) there's been an actual second season of SAO, which in the end focused on Asuna's character quite a lot…
