Volks announces new Dollfie line

Typical Volks. I'm tired of waiting to find out if it impacts me or not. On the one hand I hope it doesn't because I have more than enough projects right now, but on the other hand... the prospects could be so very tempting.

There was a small mention in the Volks News that it was coming soon I think which would imply after the next after event in the next Volks news. There's no way they would announce something big in the run-up to a dolpa.

It was never announced when they were going to release the info, everyone just hoped that the next magazine after the first announcement(in this case the magazine for Dollpa Kyoto 10) would contain more info.

I'm hoping for a male DD, and I think it would make more sense to offer a standard male DD to join with the Yukino, Aoi, etc. (or join the Akihabara lineup). That way, they would have a broader market to tap without having to pay a royalty or license to produce a specific character. Beginning male characters could be supplied with a custom line of heads ala the current DDH-05, -06, -07 that already come with faceups. Clothing could possibly be transitioned from SD13 boy stocks with specific character costumes to follow at a later time as demand is established. Your average male character in so many animes is pretty much served by a generic dark fabric school uniform!

I'm actually starting to wonder if keeping things slightly out of stock is part of their business model.

 

They can purposefully restrict supply to change the supply:demand ratio. That way they create an artificial scarcity. The same thing happens with diamond, gold and oil production. You think diamonds are that expensive because they're rare? No. They're that expensive because where diamonds are mined only cartels are given mining rights (such as De Beers). They then restrict how many diamonds they release on the market. They're not as scarce as people think. They just hoard them away. OPEC controls oil prices that way too.

 

Volks' stuff already goes at 50% plus markup in the after market. Even second hand stuff usually sells above retail - not even limited ed stuff - unless it's very damaged.

How does Volks profit on this though?

They don't -- I don't think it's a good comparison. The diamond market is really the inverse of the DD market. With diamonds, they're very expensive to get from the seller (DeBeers and their contracted sellers) but they're actually relatively cheap on the second-hand market (check out the prices on Ruby Lane for a good idea: there's a platinum ring with a 1.31 carat EGL-certified diamond for $7,900 -- that diamond alone, before you paid for the platinum and labor, would be around $9,300 from a jeweler).

 

Volks is more like a luxury handbag company than a diamond company. Artificial scarcity does benefit them in some ways:

+ They can sell their items for above "competitive" market value. An SD13 standard girl is around $700... compare to Delf ($460), Senior Delf ($540), Gem ($472), AS Youth ($510-$550), Soul-Double ($575), Blue Fairy ($430), Iple YID ($610). Now an SD13 does come with a face-up, wig, and a basic nightgown, but I think it would be hard to argue that those are enough to account for a $200ish price difference.

+ Low production numbers of highly-sought items mean they are left with very little unsold stock -- almost everything is guaranteed to sell out in a very short period of time. There's very little risk of unsold stock.

+ A certain prestige is assigned to their products because they are scarce and thus hard to acquire. This increases brand visibility and recognition and helps cement their position in the market.

Im guessing we will know more news after the next event, sometime in april? =__= im dying to know... :p

I'm hoping they will tell us before I get around to buying more bodies, just in case it happens to be boy DD... Granted it isn't an immediate concern for me, but I don't want to get Obitsu boy bodies right before Volks might finally release their own. I know this is all just supposition, but I have been thinking about it.

 

I wish they would have at least told us if it were a resin line, vinyl, or something else... that would have cut down on the stress.

Given they're just now warming up the 15th Anniversary festivities, I'm guessing info on this line is going to be part of that. So we're either going to see the details of the new line right before the final Best Selection stuff comes out, or right after. (This conjecture is partially influenced by the DDS body being introduced as part of the DD 7th Anniversary stuff.)

 

And yeah, I agree, Sister Kyoya! Just one broad hint regarding material and/or scale would be very welcome!

I'm almost hoping its not a male DD because that would just about kill my wallet. LOL. But yeah, some news on whether it is resin or vinyl would be great.

Elf ear head.....I was disappointed with other doll places making glue on or magnet attaching ears that didn't even fit/look right when added on. I know it would be difficult to design a nice long ear elf but I can dream

Same here, I would love fantasy Dollfies :p. I've wanted an elf doll for quite some time, but BJD's are too realistic for my taste. I personally would love to see an elf in the cute anime style that Dollfie Dreams are :3.

The fit to the original ear will be better, since the clay can mold to it.

So true. If they would only make standard male bodies that fit dollfie dream heads, I wouldn't have to exert so much time and energy into customising obitsu bodies (the necks are nightmares), only to have the joints break within a minute

And this. Plus the Obitsu male bodies can't even remotely pretend to be sexy. All I have to say is swimsuit season doesn't affect just girls. I have 4 boys already and I'd put everything on hold to get 100% Volks male bodies for them if they were available. Volks, if you are smart you'll hop on this. Customers are nearly begging you to do a male version of a line that you already have. We aren't asking you to fly across the universe or something.

Though Volks already announced the new Standard Models for Super Dollfies, there wasn't much regard on the new line, nor the Dollfie Memorial year information. Seems like we would need to wait for Volks News 59. :/

I guess they want to spread the news out and not announce the SD line and the new Dollfie line at the same time. I feel like I spend all my time waiting for news and releases, what kind of hobby is this

Are we sure that the "new dollfie line" doesn't just mean that there will now be standard yo-sds? Or that it wasn't just referring to the new standards in general?

I don't think there are standard Yo SD. The YOSD Rinon, Elena and Kanata are Yo versions of standard SD but are limited for next dolpa and so not a new line. ^_^

I just saw some news about a new SDGr doll called bisque SDGr. It looks like it is a kind of porcelain doll, but I am not sure I understand correctly. The doll is pretty, but I hope she is not that new dollfie line announced...
