Adapting Knitting Patterns

Recommended Posts

Jezrah

I thought I'd post a small tutorial on how I adapted a human sized knitting pattern. I found the pattern on Ravelry, and although it's freely available, it also copywritten. So you can use it to make the hat, but you can't sell the finished product.

I actually made a human sized one for myself first, and I love it. Then I thought it'd look awesome on a dolly.

It only took me one try, and it came out perfectly. I used medium (4 or worsted) weight yarn, Red Heart Shimmer in purple haze. It's mostly acrylic with a metallic polyester thread running through it. I like to use acrylic for dolly things since it's soft and doesn't stain.

I think it turned out super cute.

Anyways, I cast on as the pattern called for, loosely, on US size 2 needles. I used a set of four DPNs, with 16 stitches on each needle. I usually use the magic loop method, but I only had DPNs in that size. Following directions, I K1P1 for about 1 1/4" or so. Then I switched to US size 8 needles (this is where I had to change to magic loop, with 24 stitches per needle, because of what I had available) and start the "puff rib" stitch. I did three repeats, then decreased for the crown. I tend to knit fairly tightly, so you may need to adjust somewhat if you knit loosely. For those not in the US, there are charts online to convert the needle size and yarn weight as needed.

Oh, and to wear it slouchy like that rather than looking like a big mushroom on her head, you just pull the band in place and then give the back part a tug downward.

Feel free to post your own experiences/adaptations.

Wow. Thank you so much for your post

I am looking on how much stitches need to cast on for MDD. There is a lot of guide but I am still not getting used with gauge and such. I just know some yarn are for 5mm and milk cotton yarn (what I want for my MDD) are good with 2.5-3.5 mm.

I wonder if somehow anyone know some knitting pattern for mdd?

Yiss a knitting thread As for MDD, I think they should fit clothes for normal MSD? (as in "not slim MSD")?

DD should be nice and cozy with SD knitted clothes? For a Feeple65, which is about just as "boobielicious", using 4ply sock yarn and 3mm DPN, I cast on 16 st on each needle (64 cirbleepference). Or, if you rather use 2.5 needles, use 18 st per needle.

Will this be just a general knitting thread or a more strict adating patterns thread? It has gotten so hot here that I feel bad that Miku only has long sleeves. I like making my own patterns though.

Well, my Grilka has an Obitsu40 body, but the measurements for MDD are not too far off Therefore, patterns for "normal" MSD (NOT slim MSD) fit comfortably (... depending on your gauge, obviously).

This sweater is knit with 2.5 mm DPN and 4ply sock yarn, it has a cirbleepference of 60 st at the largest, 40 st. at the narrowest part (sleeves 20 st each)

I'd love to know how to adapt a knitting pattern to 1/3 size! I have quite a few lovely sweaters saved on ravelry to try...

Hey @toletta! If you are still wondering about adapting knitting patterns, I use the guidelines from this blog post: https://undermostsalamander.wordpress.com/re-sizing-patterns/. The only trick is that you also have to upsize your doll measurements to make sure they will fit the size you are looking at.

I recently downsized the Sockhead Hat, but didn't think to upsize Miku's head. If you upsize hear head to human size, she would have a 30 inch head! Sadly, outside the hat's range without some modification. Miku still doesn't have her hat.

Of course, my strategy is to just learn to knit my own patterns so I don't have to worry about finding patterns that will work downsized. I've been learning from Elizabeth Zimmerman. I have the knitting techniques down, but I still struggle with how much ease I need. A trick to that would be to take a shirt (if you are making a sweater) that you like the fit on your doll and work the sweater to those measurements.
