Washing Clothes?

Recommended Posts

Load Ran

When I purchased my Nia, I ended up getting her second hand. Which wasn't a problem for me, since she arrived in very good condition. But I noticed there was something, well, off about her clothes. They seemed a bit darker, less vibrant than I thought they would be. I've been looking for information on how to wash clothes but haven't really found much.

Nia's main outfit consists of three parts - a long shirt, skirt and half skirt. The shirt and half skirt attach together with velcro, while the other skirt has a clasp and zipper. So my question is, what is the best way to wash these clothes, especially the ones with the velcro? And, will washing them remove wrinkles and brighten the colours a bit? Even just a little? I really want to put Nia in her default outfit, but I've been putting it off because of its condition...

Hopefully someone can help me out! ^_^

You'll probably have to handwash and iron them! I can't say if it'll help the color though - it could either be dingy or faded or both. If it's just dingy, then yes.

I've only had to wash one outfit that I bought used and it smelled a little funny to me. Kind of musty.

Anyways, all I did was fill my kitchen sink halfway with warm water and add 2 drops of Dawn Liquid soap to the water. Then I added the clothes, swirled them around a bit by hand and let them soak for about an hour. After that I drained the sink and washed them very gently by hand with water only, no soap and with a very soft brush.

After doing that, I placed them on a towel on the kitchen table to dry with the ceiling fan above them on medium. I wouldn't put any DD clothes in a dryer even on a light heat setting, it may damage them.

The clothes came out of that with no more odd smell and they looked nice and clean. I can't say they were any brighter in color but if yours are dirty, it will help to at least give them a good washing.

I hope this helps you!

I've washed some outfits in the washing machine in a "delicates" bag, basically a mesh bag for holding small items. I then let them air dry hanging on hangers. I've never had a problem with doing so, but wouldn't do it for velvets or anything like that.

I do have a front loading washer though, so no agitator in the middle for things to get snagged on.

Thank you guy so much for all your help! I just handwashed everything a little while ago, so when everything dries I'll see how it all looks. My friend has a front loading washer, and if they're still a little dark, I'll try the mesh bag method.

I might try this on some clothing I'm making which is likely to cause staining - I hope that some of the colour will come out whilst washing and end up less likely to cause staining. Has anyone else got experience of this and the results?

This is how I wash my dd's clothes - however I use an old top loader and it leaves them a little linty ^^;

I use cold water to help keep the colours vibrant.

Materials

-Wash tub

-Detergent

-Bath towel

-Blow dryer

-Microfiber towel

-Cold water

I use a Rubbermaid Dishpan to hand wash my girls' clothes. I'm a big FAN of Rubbermaid. The quality of the Rubbermaid Dishpan is superb, and it lasts for years!

For detergent, I use Woolite Extra Delicates Care. It won't cause shape loss, fiber damage or pilling. Other detergent such as Tide or just dishwasher soap works too, but I wanted something more "light," and that's where the Woolite Extra Delicates Care comes in. I start out with a pre-wash by submerging an outfit in cold water and then pouring a little bit of Woolite Extra Delicates Care onto the palm of my hands before I start hand washing the clothes. After the pre-wash, I gently wash it again with just cold water. And once I'm done with two rounds of washing, I place the clothes onto a towel.

To finish it off, I use a blow dryer on the low setting to dry the wet clothes.

I don't like to thoroughly dry the clothes using a blow dryer, because it will take too long. To make up for this, I wrap all the "half-dried" clothes with a *microfiber towel and leave the towel in a well ventilated area. Viola! Nice and clean!

*A microfiber towel can soak and hold A LOT of water. When using a microfiber towel, be aware of where you put it. Towels made from microfibers can easily collect dust, dirt, and other small particles. It's no wonder why some drivers use specialized microfiber towels to wash and clean their cars!

I was mine tied into a white pillow case (to protect them), one piece at a time with cold water.

I had this picture before on Kanu's introduction post. She uses a computer case fan plugged into an external power supply to help dry her laundry faster.

I absolutely LOVE that photo! It captures her in such a great stance.... it's just like she was there doing her laundry. Perfectly candid.

I hope this would be the place to ask, but do you guys recommend washing the Volks 'flesh toned' body stocking? And would I do this the same way I would with any other clothes?

Thanks.^^

I don't see why you can't wash that like any other article of DD clothing. Maybe handwashing instead of putting in a bag inside a washing machine would be the more cautious approach. That's probably what I'd do if I needed to wash one of those.

Just as a rule of life, I don't hand wash anything (Clothes, pantsu, bras... whatever... I can't be bothered.)

If it's delicate, I put it in a lingerie bag and set my washing machine on "super-delicates" so it doesn't agitate and I also use Woolite, and I'll add a tiny touch of colour-safe bleach to brighten up the colours if necessary.

There's really no reason to wash my DD clothes since it's not like my girls get sweaty or roll around in the grass - however I recently got a couple of outfits second-hand and they just aren't as crisp and vibrant as they should be so I washed them and then let them air dry. They were as good as new!

Woolite! :3

How is Woolite treating you thus far?

I'm afraid of using bleach, even if it's colour-safe. XD

I really appreciate the mini-guide! I had actually thought Woolite was the best option, but I didn't know they had a extra delicates type. I only knew of the Cold Wash one >_>

I would totally stick to hand washing (I'm just that careful), but the mesh bags do work for delicates (I use it for non-dollfie clothing haha).
