Shirt Designs

I'm curious if anybody tried printing simplistic designs or images onto Dollfie Dream shirts of any kind. Any kind of simple white shirt or "vest" with your favourite Doll, unicorn, image snapped, or anything of that sort using whatever printing service or private printer.

Looking at a fox emblem shirt made me curious if there's even a custom "official" photo-printing service somewhere around the world able to print 1/3 scale clothing. Seeing that now has me wanting to get some fox patterns printed out, just not sure where to start on this "simple" idea.

Maybe the answer is actually obvious and I'm not thinking because I haven't actually done any proper digging. Pretty sure there is someone using those special printers you can get for "cheap" at Best Buy or so to do such. Maybe even as simple as Walmart or something *shrugs*. Some simple fun

There are a few people on etsy making custom logos/emblems on t-shirts. Not sure about your local malls or shops, but some t-shirt kiosk places will add iron on stuff if you bring your shirts in for a fair fee. Otherwise maybe someone on the forum has a printer to make what you need, good luck with your fox emblem.

Would be neat to find one that people bought from before. And I should start looking for places like that around here now that you brought it up. Hopefully someone has something for me to take advantage of. Guess I need to even purchase simple shirts to even do such. I'm glad I even bothered asking because your post made think of simple stuff as patches that might be easy or hard to find.

I ask because I saw this - http://nightfallwalker.web.fc2.com/dd_op111.htm - catching my interest, just not fully to be an impulsive purchase. Only one left as well hmm. I don't have an exact emblem in mind, just a nice simple "fox face" emblem as seen on those gangster style clothing, or even this one - Fox Tribal Logo - for the fun of it.

Came across these recently and they look more cute, if that's what you're aiming for.

They look awesome and neat. A bit on the "too cute" side. Hopefully there's something simple and neat

One thing you could try is ironing some fabric for a shirt onto some freezer paper, and then running it through a cheaper inkjet printer. We experimented with that before, and it can work if you get thin enough fabric! But then you'll have to cut out and sew the shirt. I am not sure at all if the ink will bleed out the back of the fabric onto your doll, so you should experiment with that.

You can also look around to see if a print shop in your area does dye sublimation or direct to garment printing. Both of those can print directly onto a finished garment, but dye sublimation offers a bit more precision with something as small as a doll shirt. Direct to garment printing would be better for larger things, as it's difficult to line up tiny things and keep them flat on the printing plate. Both services would be a little more expensive, but you could print out multiple shirt face patterns on one piece of fabric, then cut those out and sew shirts to save a bit on expense and time. For those too, all you would need is a JPEG or PNG file of your art.

Another thing I thought of! If you want to do simple, I've seen basic silkscreen kits on craft store shelves. Silk screening is very easy if all you want is one color. I've even seen a few kits that I still need to look up, but they seem to be simple sun-exposure sheets that can then be used as basic screens. You just need to flood the screen and then draw the squeegee over. If that's indeed the case, it would be pretty simple to get a couple things done quickly. Also, there's items like the Yudu home silkscreening machine. I actually have one of those, we just never use it. >_>

In addition, I've found fabric paints near the silkscreen supplies at United Art. I want to experiment with using those and linoleum blocks to stamp designs onto pre-made shirts. The application of a heat press makes the paint more durable, so all I would need to probably do is iron the design (and make sure the fabric can be ironed at high temps of course).

There's also iron-on paper you can buy and put in your home printer. I've used some in the past and it held up decently well. http://www.amazon.com/Epson-Transfer-8-5x11-Inches-S041153/dp/B00004TS2H is one I found quickly. You do need to make sure you get the right paper for your pinter (inkjet vs laser), and I'd say also double check whether it has a white versus clear background as, unless the shirt is white, you may want to adjust your design to accommodate it.

Not suitable for mass production naturally, but pretty good for doing a few prototypes or one-offs for personal use.

In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

Yeah I've seen people around the do custom prints on DD shirts. And I've used the iron on sheets myself that you can get at walmart. they work pretty well. Not sure if they would stain though so i would be careful.

*rubs hands happily* Loads of good ideas here. Once I get funds growing again doing stuff like this should be 'easy' and fun. Can't wait to give this a try. Thanks for the posts and tips on various ways of tackling this idea.

You could try asking Chun here on the forum (Puppy52 on flickr) how she did her custom fabric with pictures of her two cats (see here The evilbay work in progress ^^; slower than I like, adding details etc :) #sewing #puppy52dolls #dollfiedream).

If I remember correctly I think I read somewhere that she had a company do it for her. Maybe you could use the same printing service since both of you are in Canada.

I did talk to Chun loosely on figure.fm with possibly something coming out of it from either side. Think iron-ons may be the way to go from that brief conversation. Thanks for the suggestion, and guess I'll nudge Chun again when I'm actually ready to hit up many projects I want to do, one of which is a simple fox emblem shirt and another being a Maple Skirt still stuck in concept stage.
