Other compatible heads for Dollfie Dreams?

Recommended Posts

Fayoka

I just currently bought an MDD and I'm considering getting a DDS or DD next, but I was also curious to see if other heads fit these body types? I have been told SQ-lab heads sometimes fit MDDs, which piques my interest. Just throw at me any type of head you know is compatible ( that of course doesn't look horrid )! Thanks guys~

There's at least one small production artist head that a few people own on here-- Out of Base is one of them. I'm sure there's more, but we haven't talked about/found them yet here! You can also try Obitsu/Parabox heads. Also, there are some BJD resin heads that, when painted well, look wonderful as anime-style heads. My favorite are these gorgeous Blue Fairy dolls. I know that Bluefairy usually has darker resin than most companies, and since Volks normal tone for Dollfie Dream is dark it might be a fit. 2D Doll is also new and their color apparently matches Volks white tone for Dollfie Dreams.

Hrm, they don't necessarily have to be "anime"-style. I was just curious as to what all would work well, but maybe things that aren't anime-style look bad on them? I'm not sure since I just got my doll yesterday! ( Naughty me already anticipating my next doll when this one isn't done. >>;; ) Thanks for the links you've given me though! Very nice information here~

If you don't need anime style, then you just need the color of the head to match the body-- which can be pretty tricky. Especially since all the Volks vinyl colors are not only darker than most dolls, but not often mimicked outside of anime-style head makers. Attaching the head to the neck can be done with a bunch of creative mods depending on the joint style and the weight of the head you get too. It's all very doable! Good luck!

Woah really? I didn't expect that sort of answer! I felt like some of the heads would at least look weird, as in not the right size, or just be plain incompatible!

Hybrid dolls are very common in the resin BJD community. Check the Flickr tag if you'd like! If the color doesn't match, you can also airbrush the doll's head to match the body. I'm not sure how well airbrushed color holds on a vinyl head though since the vinyl is squishy. I'd worry about the paint cracking. I did airbrush a Monster High vinyl head before and squished it without the paint cracking, but the paint job I did for that was thick-- which may have contributed to its elasticity.

Oh yeahhhh! I've totally never thought about the paint cracking! ( I plan to do a faceup for my first time soon too ahaha; ). I'm sure there are ways to stain the heads the right color! I've seen forums about it before, and since I'd be doing a blank head it should be fine. I think I'll invest in a cheap doll or something and try airbrushing it myself and squishing it A LOT just to make sure before I do anything permanent! Thanks again for your help!

If the color is pretty close, you can blush to match using pastel powder. I've done that before for obitsu/pureneemo hybrids and it worked great

I think most 'SD' type heads will look good on DD body, though SQ Lab is sometimes smallish and same for Azone/Obitsu vinyl heads. One thing to consider is the diameter of the neck vs the head you want to attach, if the head has a small neck socket it will ride too high on the neck and look odd.

Yeah I see! Thanks! I'm a bit disappointed to hear that though, I really liked some of the SQ lab heads and I really don't care for their body types. Do you think some of the SD heads ( The really "moe" looking ones ), would look good on an MDD?

I think most DD heads and SQ lab heads will look good on MDD body! There is a thread dedicated to SQ lab on MDD body photos around here someplace. If you aren't sure about a certain head you can always ask forum folks for photos to help you decide
