Amara77 Posted June 29, 2015 Ya that's his official second head. I think he won't completely use someone else's rendition because of copyright issues. The duck mouth like poofiemus pointed out is just poor sculpting, but it can be sanded down. The over all shape and proportions of his face are so MUCH better and I'm so in! I'm glad he listened to our feedback, and that people posted their constructive criticism!! http://amara77.wordpress.com blog and shop Spoke too soon.... SisterKyoya Posted June 30, 2015 I meant to respond to this the other day but it's been kinda crazy around here. It's disorienting having where we live ending up on national and international news. Anyhoo, I really do like the new sculpt. I did send mock-up pics to Danny including one with and without the glasses. It's at least nice to know that giving a rough look at the final product was something he took out of that. Hopefully that trend will continue. I can attest that the lips are narrower than what I had but they aren't as narrow as the 'red face' pics. I can totally understand why he still kept them somewhat thinner, it was a bit of a pain in the rear getting it to look right with the 'corner lines' when they were wide, even in photoshop. Personally my solution for that would be to just blush the lips and leave the lines off, but I know that doesn't suit everyone. But the shape of those lips... there is just something wrong. Naming the head Ahiru might fix it (Japanese for domestic duck.) HA! I just noticed that his eyebrows are thicker. That helps his manly look too. Frankly I'm just happy that we don't have to interpret the head sculpt from some dark rainbow hue, or pretending he's a zombie (the gray heads were better than the cranberry red...) ~Sister Kyoya Forum Blog: Badger Pocket Tales (Family story from the beginning) | { Old Family story reboot: Start Here! } Follow me on Twitter, Flickr & Instagram
Poofiemus Posted June 30, 2015 International news??? Sorry, I live under a rock (especially with the crazy overtime right now.) Heh, yeah, glad he turned the model to flesh tone for this one. It was hard to see detail on such a dark red. (I often work with models in whatever bizarre color 3dsMax gives me in that program, but that's because I can compensate with orbiting.) Cauldroness warned me that Mirai at least has kind of thin vinyl, so subtractive modding may be tricky. . . but that may not stop me if faceup alone can't improve the mouth. I are stubborn. As for who. . . I like this new head enough I probably will use it, but the more I think about it, the more I actually LIKE the idea of doing Tarvek. Damnit. EDIT: Do we have body measurements yet? . . .I'm already tempted to go shopping for both Tarvek AND the Doctor. (Even found a pretty damn close suit for the Doctor at Freedom Teller. o.o) In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

Ravenwolf Posted July 2, 2015 Just popping in to say that I'm very excited for this boy regardless! I'm not 100% certain on what head/heads will work for the characters I want to make, but it's going to be so neat to see them all!
jazijaz Posted July 2, 2015 The doll looks good but I have read that he's been struggling because he doesn't have any attraction to the male body or face whatsoever so he doesn't know what might look good or bad. I think this is the reason why Eiji looked so girly at first. From the new picture he looks so much better but it is not calling my heart. I would have to see the final product to find out whether or not I would be willing to throw my money at him. However, I think it is amazing that Danny is trying to please the ladies and he reads all the feedback we give him. He knows many of us have been waiting for a male doll of this kind. chien Posted July 7, 2015 I saw the head in-person at AX on Sunday. It's pretty much got the same proportional problems that the girl heads do-- I don't necessarily think that just because the sculptors are not attracted to men that it excuses wonky, technical sculpting choices. Overall, I agree that perhaps they need to look into a different sculptor for the heads since the bodies look fine (except for the hands). I think overall the head looks pretty good considering how the girls look. For those who haven't seen a turnaround of the Smart Doll Heads or handled one of their heads, I took a light-hearted video here that may help others visualize the developing skills of the sculptor they are using for the head. I was curious about if the chest of the boy body also was made of a softer vinyl, but when I asked if I could handle the doll they were unable to let me-- that's understandable, though. Also when I was at the booth, the other staff members told me that their resident doll staffer wasn't available so I didn't ask. Sorry about that, guys! I saw your video and was shocked at the complete flatness. I noticed Mirai was flat, but not THAT flat. Does he have an actual sculptor, or is this all done using 3D models? The bodies look great so I wonder why there is such a problem with heads. I mean they are cute but damn there really is no shape to that face! http://amara77.wordpress.com blog and shop Spoke too soon....

mizya Posted July 7, 2015 Poofiemus, Sure thing! ^^ I got a reply from Danny: "Hi there! I will publish measurements soon. I'm in the US now and dont have him with me ><" I wasn't expecting to hear back from him for a few days due to his trip, so I really appreciate him taking the time to send a message despite his busy schedule! But it sounds like he's planning to publish the measurements on the website for everyone to see. :3 My doll family: Umeko DDH-06 ♥ Megumi DDS Mariko ♥ Suiren DDdy Sheryl Nome ♥ Yuuri DDS Kagamine Rin ♥ Yuuya DDSb Kagamine Len ♥ Kanade DDdy Megurine Luka ♥ Miharu MDD Arle Nadja ♥ Rion DDb Kaito ♥ Enju MDD Marisa + guardian to DD Y'shtola My blog | carrd | instagram
Poofiemus Posted July 7, 2015 Alright, thanks! Though really, I think sometimes he forgets he's got minions to do that kind of stuff for him now. You know, looking at that video of Mirai and then looking at my Figma Mikuru, there's a similar flatness in both. I wonder if perhaps it's not so much the techniques the sculptor is using so much as possible carryover habits from sculpting smaller figures? In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. Cauldroness Posted July 7, 2015 If you look at Azone's line of 1/3 girls, most of them have very flat faces as well -- I think it's a particular style for translating a 2D anime style into a 3D doll. And, personally, I think it works very well when it's combined with painted-on eyes. The flatness of Azone dolls bothers me MUCH less than the flatness of Mirai, and it's because most Azones have painted-on eyes: it's flat eyes on a flat face, so nothing is that jarring. Once you put in animetic eyes, that style suddenly stops working, because now you've got this very flat, 2D face and these very vibrant, 3D eyes, and the contrast between the two is not a positive thing. And I think Danny's sculptor is essentially sculpting Azone-style heads and just punching eye holes into the sculpt, instead of really considering how the mold needs to change to accommodate the animetic eyes. I kinda agree, some of the old azone50 sculpt was quite flat, but it was based on anime design, so when it get painted it almost accurate to the original source, sames like DD they was sculpted nicely and less flat, but becaus of that sometimes they miss the original design, and doesnt look like the original anime character anymore, I think thats the case of danny case here, it misses the point to be a 3d object, but hey recently azone50 release has less flat face, maybe danny will follow that step hha
Gunter Posted July 8, 2015 I definitey agree with you, Cauldroness. When it comes to Azones I forgive their flat features because everything about them is flat. It is hard to forgive these dolls for being so flat because when you take out the eyes you start adding depth. If you don't sculpt to match it sticks out like a sore thumb and becomes a lot less appealing. TBH, I don't love the flatness of Azones either. So far there are only a very small handful that I would personally buy, but I do forgive the overall just cause aesthetically it matches.

I like some of Azone's smaller dolls, but very few of their 1/3-sized dolls because they are so flat. I think it's a style that works well, it's just not a style that I'm very interested in owning. I couldn't pass on Mirai because her body is beautiful, but I have no desire for another Danny Choo head unless he changes sculpting style. Doll Photos & Doll Jewelry Sales: Follow me on Instagram!
